Is FFXI any good? I'm kind of a hardcore gamer and I"m getting sick of WoW. Some of my friends and I are thinking of getting FFXI. Thoughts? I know the reviews for FFXI were so-so...but then again the WoW reviews weren't much better either.

Thanks for any info you can provide me.

I'm assuming you're referring to FFXI, which is the MMORPG that's been out sometime. FFXII is a single player PS2 game that comes out in a few weeks.

Right off the bat: FFXI is one of those "hardcore" style MMORPG's. If you're coming out of WoW, FFXI will feel like a full time job. The only people I know of that actually enjoy playing FFXI are the kind of people who have nothing but time to waste. (I was a hardcore FFXI gamer for a little over a year. Something like 104 days of play time and I was only level 60. The cap is 75.)

That's assuming you DID mean FFXI instead of FFXII.

Well when you hit lvl 60 with WoW it feels like a full-time job too. To keep up points in your guild you have to constantly raid and do BG stuff or you will fall behind. Basically, I"m hoping FFXI isn't a game where you really have to keep playing or you will fall behind...rather you can go at your own pace (even if it takes twice as long to hit the level cap as WoW).

FF11 was great for a while.

and yes, listen to aftermath....going to FF11 from WoW will be like a FULL time job!
I used to LAN with friends who had it on PS2 and me on my desktop a couple of times, it was pretty fun.

I had my free trial month and then I had to stop, it was pretty good none the less. If you want to try it, I woudl say go for it!

Try Everquest 2. It's a bit more like a more in depth WoW...i believe there's a free trial.

EQ2 is also one of those full time job games.. way more than WoW is.. WoW is like MMO light.. designed for casual gamers... where as everyone else lives to make things last forever and grind your ass like your are working for those levels..

if you want soemthing super casual.. maybe GW is for you.. though its less MMO than youre used to..
I personally dont care much for it.. WoW is plenty fast for me and is still fun on occasion.

I gave up the uber guilds and now just play when i want to. on the charater I want to play.. not what some guild wants me to play.

FFXI is simply the best mmo i've played, though I don't have much to compare to. Haven't played WoW, but i've played Lineage2 and a few other f2p mmo. Soloing in FFXI is terribly slow so it'll be pretty fun if you have friends joining you. I played up until the free trial and a month after, then quit. Mainly because the Linkshells I was in were full of players that never really wanted to get together to lvl and I had trouble doing alot of the missions on my own.

I'm sure you and your friends will enjoy it, any mmo played with people you know should be exciting!

Final Fantasy XI will give you major hand cramp because the game is totally played on the keyboard... I mean you can use the mouse but so much faster using the keyboard because the interface is not like your usual MMO where you have hotkeys. You can make hotkeys out of macros but just not the same. Now on to the differences...

Final Fantasy XI

Skills level up SLOW!!! I mean they go by 0.1 if I remember correctly

Not very much solo content in game

Character levels up very slow compared to WoW

The game is kinda wierd with Japanese people running around that you have to use a stupid translator depending on what time of the day you play.

Tradeskills are pretty awesome

Quest system is mediocore

WAY MORE bots that farm the hell out of the game

End game content like any other game

World of Warcraft

Very solo friendly

Levels fast

Skills gained fast

Game has bots but blizzard tries to remove them when found

Quests are good but get very repeatative near the end

Tradeskills mostly worthless

End game content very repetative

EverQuest II

Awesome game

Quest system is great but same the quests get very repetative near the end

Game has solo and group content at any level

NEEDS very very good computer to run if you want a smooth game

Also they are not supporting EverQuest II anymore because it was a BIG FLOP and now they are going back to EverQuest I and remaking the entire game into a newer version of EverQuest I.

But it depends on how you want to play. Do you want to party alot then Final Fantasy XI is good for you.

Do you want to solo alot then Guild Wars or World of Warcraft for you

But if you just wanna have fun... that is up to you to decide.

As for what next MMO to wait to play is in my opinion Conan

http://www.ageofconan.com/

I think it will be way better then crap ass Vanguard that looks like a EverQuest II rip off.

But also check out Anarchy Online... which is very fun to play with friends... no need for guilds or any of that crap. Just you and your friends running around having fun!

Whenever I watch friends play FFXI I get extremely bored off my @ss. WoW seems more exciting from the few videos I've seen of it. Maybe I'm bias since I own every single game ever made by Blizzard with the exception of WoW.

I made a commitment not to get involved with MMORPG. That may change, however, when Phantasy Star Universe comes out for the Xbox 360.

They gonna rebuild EQ1? with new engine? now that would be cool.. I loved EQ1... but despise EQ2..

I am aware of the combine server, but that is all and it is not a major revamp of EQ1. Link to where they are making an Everquest 1 on an EQ2 engine?

Umm going from WoW to a mmorpg like FFXI will be culture shock. Don't do it man. Just take a break from WoW or level up a different class.

My personal MMOcrack of choice is City of Villains. I <3 the character creator. Leveling can be slow, but when you get in on an 8 person team, it goes by in a breeze.

I looked for that ****** article for like a damn hour and I can not find it. But it was an article in Gamespy Daily stating that Sony is no longer supporting EverQuest II and deciding on to make a new EverQuest I.

On the side note... in my honest opinion WoW is much more fun then Final Fantasy XI

FFXI is fine if you

1. Don't plan on soloing, well maybe past the first 10 levels. It's impossible to solo freakin Evens!
2. Can speak Japanese
3. Expect to spend most of your time killing the same group of monsters over and over cause there is nothing else to do.
4. Plan on purchasing Gil, the market is so inflated now, non gil buying people can't afford crap off the AH
5. Have the same group of friends you play with who will always show up; if one of you get behind a couple levels your party won't get experience for crap.
6. Enjoy getting 100xp forever

My recommendation is check out Dark Age of Camelot. The RVR alone is worth it.

Not nearly as old as Verant's Everquest. Your point?

I've played most of them all. Verant's Evequest was my first love and always will be. Asheron's Call I played for a month or so didn't like it. WoW I liked but I prefer EQ even more. DAoC I loved for almost a year and would rank it 2nd to EQ. EQ2 is ok but it doesn't live up to EQ. Anarchy Online rocks I would rank it tied with WoW as my 3rd choice. I haven't played Final Fantasy XI yet so no opinion on it atm.

These are my opinions.

You could always quit MMO's altogether... MMO's are counterproductive in every way, lol.
