FF8 Rereleased for PC

FF8 was the beginning of the end for Final Fantasy. The entire series has gone so far off the tracks it's not even recognizable anymore.

FF9 was sadly the last truly good Final Fantasy that was still actually "Final Fantasy."

blitz ball.. when my attacks where as viscous as a nasty thrown dodgeball i kinda lost it, the big tough guy throwing a ball, the dainty Girl shoots dragons forms out and has all this uber cool stuff... I really enjoy JRPG's, but they tend to overstep and hit "crazyland" sometimes, and I always felt the monster boobs and swords where over the top. I can live with it all, but I really wish the whiney reluctant 16 year old hero was left out.. the first 30 hours of constant cry baby antics really spoils the games.

FFVIII is one of my favorites. Probably my number 3.

I also don't get the love for IX. Never got through disc 2. I feel like IX was actually the beginning of the end. Main characters started getting super androgynous with IX, not VIII. They got younger with VIII, but at least the setting fit.

As for X, I actually like it; I feel that it has the best combat of any FF to date.

With all that said, I'll wait for a sale, as I already own the original PC release, but I imagine they made enough changes for it to be better on modern systems. Ideally, they would patch the original up, but the price will be low enough when I do get it.

I hated FF8. Way too many cutscenes, even compared to FF7. Way too many stupid time wasters that have didly to do with the quest.
That card minigame irritated me. I hated playing it, unfortunately you needed to win those good cards so you could morph them into decent items. I also hated there was no armor and accessories, and the fact you had to morph items to get new weapons.

I REALLY hated enemies leveling up with me. I hated drawing magic, both from enemies and from invisible spots on the ground. I hated using spells because it meant your junctioned attributes would get weaker. I hated the whole junctioning system.

I hated that if you accidentally passed up an opportunity to draw something unique from a boss that you'd never ever get the chance again.

God damn that game sucked.

I will say this, it did play better in Windows than FF7 did. 3D always worked fine, there were far fewer crashes and glitches. Shame the game itself was so horrible.

I hated FF8 as well. Squall was an utterly unlikeable character and the whole love story between him and Rhinoa didn't make any sort of sense whatsoever. I hated Rhinoa and the game forced me to go chase after her for no other reason than "..." and "...whatever" from squall.

The rest of the cast was equally forgettable. I don't even remember their names.

Draw magic was shit. The combat balance in the game was ridiculously skewed since squall had to be in your party 99% of the time, so he's lvl 90 while the rest of your throw away party is lvl 20.

fuck that game.

Your character level was irrelevant in VIII. Summon levels did matter, though.

I played through the entire game once back on PS1 and I remember it being pretty tedious. I've always wanted to go back and try to play through it one more time because I honestly can't remember much of it -- As others have mentioned there wasn't anything that seemed memorable in the game, and reading over what others have disliked, is reminding me why I didn't like it; but maybe it's time to fire up the ol' PS1 emulator to give it another chance. 😉

I liked FF 12 more than any other. I haven't played them all though, I have 13 but haven't touched it yet.
I did like a lot of what FFXII had to offer, but I remember stumbling on an area in the game where I could quickly level up which made everything after that pretty trivial. I do remember finding it odd that their airships in that game were named after the summons/espers of other games.

The mechanics of the junction system were interesting, although it was beyond tedious having to draw all the good spells. Even after getting them, I never cast any magic since I kept them junctioned to stats.

The plot wasn't anything special.

Surprisingly I liked X-2 a lot. Theres a little too much story and not enough action, but the chapter select system means you can fight as much as you want and not be pushed ahead on the plot.

I also thought it was the best implementation of the Job system. All the jobs are decent if not great, you can change in the middle of battle, and the special jobs allow you to use some skills from other jobs.

Also there were a crapload of accessories some of which were awesome powerful.

Must be my poor memory, but how the hell do you fucks remember these specific details from games that came out around a decade ago?

But then, I just remembered Im just a fucking bird that eats your chicken.

Dont mind me.

Might grab this in some sort of Christmassy/Holiday/Random Steam sale.

Never got to play 8 but sort of always wanted to.

FF8 was so bad it sticks in your mind for years. And those arent details, they are the core elements of the game.

I'm playing FFX-2 right now with an emulator.
(And the original disc)

I have to say, if FF X and X-2 had the same graphical level and combat system (that is, you fight creatures you encounter real time instead of cutaway waiting to a battle) they would have been the best.

The all blend together from 8 on for me. I remember playing a good amount of both 8 and 9, but nothing stands out.
