I think that would be ok for a guy who's for the most part in good shape, but for a guy like me who needs to lose more than 50 pounds I need to lose more than 1-2 pounds per week.

Most people that crash diet will gain it all back plus some extra. 1-2 pounds a weeks is a good goal.

A "crash diet" is bound to fail. You need to make a life style change if you're looking for long-term success.

You need the weight trainging to increase lean muscle mass which helps burn more calories. You cant lose weigth quicker just because you need to lose more weight. It didnt take you a month to get over weight so dont expect to lose it in a month. Its a lifestyle change and takes time. Keep doing what you are doing and go to some forums that are dedicated to this and not a tech forum ;)

good luck

I'm not looking for a crash diet, but I don't think 1-2 pounds a week is good weight loss for a person my size. I need to lose about 60 pounds so at a pound a week thats more than a year. In my opinion thats insanely slow, I refuse to believe it should take that long to lose only 60 pounds. Especially if a person is eating healthy and working out 5-6 days a week. Maybe if I was'nt exercising I could see only losing a pound week, but I'm putting to much effort into working out to be satisfied with minimal weight loss.

Hell a 50 lbs weight loss in a year is pretty damn good. I'm sure it took you more than a year to get 50 lbs overweight.

The #1 reason so many people fail to attain their goals is because they are inpatient and give up if they don't realize their goals in a unreasonable amount of time.

Best fat is Omega-3. Avoid Omega-6 supplements because you should get more than enough through your regular diet. The better your body is at burning fat for fuel the better. Being adept at glucogenesis should be a prime goal, as it will offset the dangers of a high-protein diet. I reccomend you try to get your body in ketosis if you have that much weight to lose.

yeah I've been on the induction phase of a low carb diet for 7 days now but I still don't think I'm in ketosis based on my keto sticks. Starting tomorrow I plan on cutting back on the fat and going a bit leaner with my meals.

Its not bad I guess but when I workout I'm VERY active. I like to lift heavy, I like to run fast, then there's basketball, bike riding, skating, etc.. As soon as the weather breaks here in Chicago I'll really turn it up a notch.

You run enough your body won't let you put crap in. It's a wierd thing. Taste buds change and more importantly you body chemisty and metabolism change in such a way that you're forced onto a deit. For example: Last week I went to Costco and has like 4 peices of pizza, really went on an all out junk fest; had some oreos after with milk too. Well Next morning after dragging my arse about a mile, hurting the whole time, really feeling it, I finally puked that crap out and learned (least for awile, cuz I'm hard headed) dont put the junk in. Most people are smarter than me though so they just eat sensibly when involved in a work-out routine. Comes natural.

I definitely need to work on long distance running, I'm planning on doing a few miles this weekend.

It really depends your body type too. I'm what called a mesomorpth, gain muscle easy, strong, and areobics like running have always been a severe challenge for me. So why not do what hardest for me I thought. It worked. I was 265lbs gym rat, weights were easy..been doing them since Jr HS.. nice girls, slow pace, indoors, anarobic, easy. Well after bout killing myself going for eight laps (2miles) I never relised pis poor shape I was in dispite "working out" every morning... after a year I dropped to 235 still have the same strength feel much better, sleep less. Bascically I'm convinced weights suck, for me at least. Need the whole body working and lungs and heart.

Based on your description it sounds like I may be a mesomorpth body type as well. I seem to gain muscle fairly easy as well and I prefer sprinting over long distance running. I need to look into body types and what works best for them.

Ya dude you should never even touch a weight. Thats for the skronomophs (aka ectomorphs). Just by running my calves went from 19" to 21" not a wieght in sight but my fat arse carrying itself. You'll get muscle bound and more out of shape you spend too much time in gym with the iron. Bad for the heart.. big men don't live long muscle or fat does'nt matter..look at swartzs heart problems.. he sure looked good though.

i have a workout question as well. instead of making a new thread, i'll post my question here.

I usually weight train for like 2-2.5 hrs and then run for 30 mins. two days ago i weighed myself (with just boxers and shirt on) before running and I was at 153.2lbs. after running, with the same clothes on, i weighed 151.2lbs.

found this curious, so i repeated this experiment yesterday also. before running, I was 154.4lbs, and after I was 152.5lbs.

Now, is this normal? losing that much water-weight from just 30 mins of cardio? I am assuming its water weight i lost.

I don't see how it is possible to lose 2lbs of sweat in 30min. of cardio. Are you running in the desert?

Eating healthy is simple. Stay away from heavily processed foods. No frozen dinners, no frozen pizzas, no SPAM, no soda, no chips, cookies, etc. etc. etc.

Eat natural stuff... fruits and vegetables (specifically organic ones that haven't been pumped full of growth hormones, farmer's markets are good places to get fresh, natural stuff)... fish and beef and poultry (again, organic stuff without growth hormones if you can find it). Drink tons of water... if water is too bland, buy a juice extractor and make your own 100% natural fruit juice.

The only downside to eating healthy is the cost. My family used to spend about $80 a week on groceries... now that I've started eating healthier we spend about $120 a week because I eat a lot. For example tonight I'm going to have two 7 oz bacon wrapped sirloin fillets with a baked potato and a red bell pepper on the grill... I'll probably have a beer while I'm grilling, and another with the meal. Lookin at about $20 for that one meal... but of course, I don't eat those bacon wrapped sirloins every day. ;)

Convienance is also a huge downside. To make a palatable heathy meal takes time, and a stocked kitchen: takes me 35 min to cook short-grain organic brown rice plus time for fixin's like veggies and meats spiced all right. And they certainly don't serve it a Mc Donalds or anywhere else.:( So I'm basically screwed at lunch and just hit Baja Fresh or something. ( I can't eat cold foods and a apple just does'nt cut it)

I think he's looking for support which is cool with me. When undertaking something like weight loss or getting into good physical shape support from others really helps.

I prefer to help someone with this kind of endeavor than some clueless Wanker over his lack of a love life.

1 gallon of water weighs over 8 pounds... so you only have to lose 1/4 of a gallon of sweat to lose 2 pounds. That doesn't sound so difficult to imagine if running on a treadmill for 30 minutes... especially if you were wearing a sweatshirt or something to stay hot so you sweat more.

you are REALLY REALLY overtraining in the weight lifting department. your weight lifting exercising should not go more than an hour. more than an hour is too long. you should target 45mins if possible. i realize that if you are working out with a partner it will take longer, but if you are by yourself, it should never go past 1 hour for weight training in one session. after that, you are just doing overkill. your body is just physically too exhausted to push yourself to your potential.

if you don't believe that last statement, just try splitting your 2hour workout into 2 1hour workouts. i guarantee you that on your 2nd day you will have more energy/strength than you would have had your 2nd hour of the normal workout routine.

but losing that much water weight is pretty normal, if you are a sweater. i personally sweat a LOT when doing cardio. hell, i sweat a lot when lifting weights. i typically can vary in weight by like 3-4lbs each day, depending on which time of the day I weigh myself. i wouldn't worry if i were you about that water weight.

and fyi, running hard for 15 minutes is better for you than jogging for 30 minutes. that crap you see on the treadmills that say to target a lower heart rate for fat burn and a higher heart rate for cardio misleads people. in general, the higher your heartrate, the more fat you are going to burn. and to get your heart rate up, you have to do high intensity running. if you jog for 30 minutes, you probably won't get your heart rate anywhere near the target cardio (which is what you want for the best results).

i am 23yrs old about 182-185lbs right now, and when i do lower intensity cardio my heartrate is about 120-130bpm. if i do high intensity it is between 155-165bpm. from my experience, i have always seen the best results from doing thie higher intensity with my heartrate up the whole time. i tend to run after i lift weights as well because lifting will get your blood flowing and your heart rate up as well.

I'm fine with supporting him, just not:

M: "Anyone on Atkins"
T: "Anyone on South Beach"
W: "Do you do low reps + heavy sets"
TH: "How many low reps do you do on heavy sets"
F: etc....

Consolidation is nice sometimes. :)

Portable sounds like left-overs..something else I don't eat. :p

Believe me I've tried many books like south beach, cooking without, etc.. basically thier solution at lunch, away from home, is yogurts, cut veggie sticks, nuts and other bland/cold things along those lines. Sorry Just have to run a bit longer each morning and settle for local estabishments fresh food for lunches and emergencies like "soup or salad", "Quizos", "baja fresh"

it could be a few things. it could be when he wieghed himself before the workout he had eaten as well, putting more weight in him. then while running, he burns all that off + loses water weight. it is not uncommon at all. that 2lbs is ingsignificant though as it has nothing to do with his actual fat loss.

Does it count as "left-overs" if you make it the night before, or in the morning with the intention of having it for lunch the next day?

I've been going to the gym 3-4 times a week Since august lifting and cardio

I've not lost any weight.

But I am stronger, more muscle, more fit, and feel healthier. Concentrating on your weight isnt always the best indicator of your sucess.

You weight train for 2 - 2 1/2 hrs?

Don't you burn up your glycogen stores in about an hour or so?

It takes me about 2 hours to burn up my glycogen stores on the bike, and that's burning way more kcal per hour than lifting does.

I'd recommend shortening your weight training to about 45 minutes. Shorter more intense training. There is no need to train for that long and frankly I have never read any convincing evidence that it does any good. Instead of resting between sets try going immediatlely to another exercise pumping out a set and cycle around liek that. I do about 6-7 exerices with 3 sets each and am usually done in 45 minutes. If you do it effectively since you are never resting you are getting yoru cardio in at the same time.

Just a thought!
