Don't bother. Just eat healthy, don't gorge yourself, and work out. It'll come off.

What's the best exercises for burning off fat?
Anything that uses large muscle groups repeatedly. Cycling, running, swimming, XC skiing, etc. Pick one you like and do it 3-5 times per week.

I need to buy more weights already, I'm already maxing out on my dumbells. I need to find a better set of dumbell weights with good grips and that I can easily change the amount of weight. Any suggestions?
I've seen dumbells that are "modular" where you can add weight as you wish, but they're $.

I usually weight train for like 2-2.5 hrs and then run for 30 mins. two days ago i weighed myself (with just boxers and shirt on) before running and I was at 153.2lbs. after running, with the same clothes on, i weighed 151.2lbs.

found this curious, so i repeated this experiment yesterday also. before running, I was 154.4lbs, and after I was 152.5lbs.

Now, is this normal? losing that much water-weight from just 30 mins of cardio? I am assuming its water weight i lost.

I'd recommend shortening your weight training to about 45 minutes. Shorter more intense training. There is no need to train for that long and frankly I have never read any convincing evidence that it does any good. Instead of resting between sets try going immediatlely to another exercise pumping out a set and cycle around liek that. I do about 6-7 exerices with 3 sets each and am usually done in 45 minutes. If you do it effectively since you are never resting you are getting yoru cardio in at the same time.

Just a thought!
Most people who spend more than an hour at the gym weight training usually take longer between sets and often spend as much time BS'ing with others as they do working out

I train for about 2-2.5hrs but I take my time during my sets :) and I OL which doesn't require me for the most part to kep busy but rest 2-3mins between sets to recover my glycogen stores :)

Be consistent OP and you will get there. IF your not making improvements step up the cardio a bit or eat less. Stay away from soda and beer for as MUCH AS YOU CAN.

I think that would be ok for a guy who's for the most part in good shape, but for a guy like me who needs to lose more than 50 pounds I need to lose more than 1-2 pounds per week.

I think losing more than 1 lb/week can be dangerous...

you are REALLY REALLY overtraining in the weight lifting department. your weight lifting exercising should not go more than an hour. more than an hour is too long. you should target 45mins if possible. i realize that if you are working out with a partner it will take longer, but if you are by yourself, it should never go past 1 hour for weight training in one session. after that, you are just doing overkill. your body is just physically too exhausted to push yourself to your potential.

if you don't believe that last statement, just try splitting your 2hour workout into 2 1hour workouts. i guarantee you that on your 2nd day you will have more energy/strength than you would have had your 2nd hour of the normal workout routine.

but losing that much water weight is pretty normal, if you are a sweater. i personally sweat a LOT when doing cardio. hell, i sweat a lot when lifting weights. i typically can vary in weight by like 3-4lbs each day, depending on which time of the day I weigh myself. i wouldn't worry if i were you about that water weight.

and fyi, running hard for 15 minutes is better for you than jogging for 30 minutes. that crap you see on the treadmills that say to target a lower heart rate for fat burn and a higher heart rate for cardio misleads people. in general, the higher your heartrate, the more fat you are going to burn. and to get your heart rate up, you have to do high intensity running. if you jog for 30 minutes, you probably won't get your heart rate anywhere near the target cardio (which is what you want for the best results).

i am 23yrs old about 182-185lbs right now, and when i do lower intensity cardio my heartrate is about 120-130bpm. if i do high intensity it is between 155-165bpm. from my experience, i have always seen the best results from doing thie higher intensity with my heartrate up the whole time. i tend to run after i lift weights as well because lifting will get your blood flowing and your heart rate up as well.

couple questions.

when you are working out, are you constantly working out with minimal rest time? such as, i see some people do a set of benchpress, then instead of waiting around, they do a set of bicep or tricep, then go back to 2nd set of benchpress...etc.

usually when I am working out, I 1 muscle group at a time, but I do 2 muscle groups a day - chest/biceps, shoulder/triceps, and back/legs. repeat. i only do cardio on my chest and shoulder days.
I tried doing the mixed-muscle-group-between-sets workout...but halfway thru I was so tired that I actually felt nauseous. thats why I think i take so long - all my rest period between sets. I'll give you an example of my workout routine
1. benchpress (4 sets)
2. preacher curls (4 sets)
3. incline dumbell press (4 sets)
4. standing straight-bar bicep curl (4 sets)
5. decline press (4 sets)
6. seated concentration bicep curls (3 sets)
7. butterfly (4 sets)
8. seated concentration hammer curls (3 sets)
9. cable crossover - lower chest (3 sets)
10. cable crossover - upper chest (2-3 sets)
plus I do various stomach crunches/situps/hanging leglifts which take me 20 - 25 mins per day.

also my cardio is a mix between low-intensity and high-intensity. when i start off, my heart rate is usually around 100 bpm. i jog the first mile at 6.1 mph, then between 1 mile and 1.8 mile, i go up .1 mph every .1 mile. finish increasing my rate at 1.8 miles when i reach 7mph and run the next 1.2 miles at 7mph. usually end up finishing 3 miles in about 27-28 mins. but my heart rate when im done is around 175 bpm. Im 23.

Not "dangerous", just hard to do in a healthy manner. You have to do some pretty extreme diet/exercise to lose more than 2lbs per week.

this is just what I was asking about. I will give this another shot since I really dont like spending so much time at the gym. Last time i tried this kinda workout I nearly fainted (well not really...but i felt nauseous). But that was when I was getting back into the workout routine. I'll give this another try....maybe now that I am a bit stronger, I can handle this...

Why are you doing so much cardio you are skinny!!!!

There is nothing wrong with lifting till you puke. In fact I know I had a good work out when I feel nauseous at the end.

yea. well I'm not really BSing since I just switched over to Gold's from NYSC and I dont really know anyone from this gym yet. I workout by myself, but ask other for spot if I need one. I usually take like 60-90 secs rest between each set.

I prefer to help someone with this kind of endeavor than some clueless Wanker over his lack of a love life.

I'm fine with supporting him, just not:

M: "Anyone on Atkins"
T: "Anyone on South Beach"
W: "Do you do low reps + heavy sets"
TH: "How many low reps do you do on heavy sets"
F: etc....

Consolidation is nice sometimes. :)

Don't like it, don't respond

I was wondering how long it would take you to show up :) I also do about 2min. between sets. When you are lifting heavy, you need that much time to recover.

I've done supersetting before, normally only when I'm really short on time (like I happen to find a gym while on vacation or something), and yes it can make a person very sick. I still remember a workout I had fully ten years ago. I did my entire body in about 60 minutes, doing several sets per part, jumping around from excercise to exercise and man I felt awful after that. I still do superset now sometimes doing shoulders and tris, since it just saves time and neither is a particularly brutal muscle group for me (depending on which exercises I pick), or hamstrings and calves, but if you're doing chest/back, and then throwing in bis/tris and all that it's bucket time!

The beauty of just doing plenty of cardio and gym time is that you can eat a basically normal diet and still lose weight. I've lost 35lbs since this time last year and I basically just cut down my portions and beer consumption. I like food too much to dick around with the latest diet fad.
