Fermi/GT300 A2 tapeout

Sucks for nVIDIA, if true. But then again, it's written by Charlie (who has a hate-hate relationship with nVIDIA), so I'd take it with a grain of salt.

486 dx4 100 oc'ed 120mhz on 40mhz bus from 33
PCI motherboard 256k cache
256mb ram
8meg Matrox millineum II pci card
4 2.1gb hard drives

Still rockin' that 486, I see!

466 were good processors, I still have a 486 DX2 @66mhz running Windows 3.11 as a SNES emulator. I keep it around because I have one of those old school, awesome IBM Model M keyboards that I like using.

That was my first processor! Hell yea.
Kickin it old school..

Is this that much of a surprise? Its a huge die on an already troubled 40nm node.

Yields will suck, even if they were good, the thing is still huge and is going to cost an arm.

Was that a very mean-spirited article, or what? I understand what he is trying to say, but he has some definite issues with NV...

Well at least we can see if fud_o or charlie is right. Sucks for nvidia if true.

Besides I miss my old avatar and the beers and flowers.

Let me see, what did I say two months ago?

Ah yes, that there's no way for a 2009 launch from Nvidia.

<measuring epenis>Gee, I was right again...<with bored face, walks away>

For some reason I sense that the topper is strong in this one...

That's worrysome, without nVidia releasing something new, the market will stagnate and that will raise the prices of the ATi HD 5x00 series. nVidia is in big trouble, and now that they discontinued the GTX series, which card can use to compete with the HD 58x0 series? While the GTX 295 can do just fine, is a waste of money which only the nVidia loyals are willing to spend.

My hopes to see a HD 5870 for less than $350.00 are lost...

Who knows, maybe there will be a few more enjoyable games to pick up by then too for use with these latest and greatest gpus.

Besides DIRT 2, at least for me, there is no other game that will use direct x 11 that matters. So I'm set for the waiting. 🙂

According to the latest numbers I saw Nvidia lost a good amount of market share. If they don't have anything new out, it could get a lot worse for them. Of course this assumes that games worth playing (especially DX11) come between now and March, AMD can produce their 40nm parts, and these reports are true.

Well any delay is excellent news for AMD I would guess.
I assume since TSMC only has a finite amount of 40nm production that both AMD and NV are going to be competing for it, and if yields are poor that means not many usable dies.
If NV were trying to produce their high end card as well as ATI, then I would assume that would reduce wafers for AMD to use?
Therefore any delays mean that AMD might have more production for themselves and then be able to get out more cards and put the pressure on NV that way, as well as being the company with the cards (almost) out in the market, except you can't buy them.

ok now I understand why AMD/ATI is raising prices like they deserve an extra Xmas bonus. This doesn't look good combined with TSMC's 40nm troubles. I think March is more realistic now that everything is on the table.
