Fenixgoon went autocrossing!!

Fenixgoon

Lifer
and holy shit it was awesome!! there's no possible way to experience anything like this on public roads. suffice to say, i will definitely autox in the future. tires are going to become a large part of my yearly expenses 😉

Day1 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oVK_4GYCpRw&feature=youtu.be

Day1 was the official auto-x day and is scored by SCCA index times (a time multiplier is assessed based on the car's weight, wheel horsepower, and tires)

Day2 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=apvUh4wx7iI&feature=youtu.be

Day2 was "test and tune." A chance to play with your setup and see what works best. Times are kept, but you don't earn any points for the event.

I started out with a 50.5 on Day1, and my final lap on Day2 was 46.53 🙂

 :awe: AutoX is very addicting,

Did you chalk your tires or adjust pressure at all? What tires were you using? It's weird to not hear the tires at all in your video, especially when you slid out...

One comment: on your fastest recorded lap you did a much better job placing the front right tire closer to the cones. You straightened out some of the corners and I think that's how you picked up speed.

I've only done it at driving events... last was in a Q5 & A6 supercharged. It's not fast unless your tires are squealing... and thankfully they weren't MY tires. 😉

stock summer tires: Bridgestone Potenza RE050A @ 38psi (standard is 35psi)

i chalked the tires but there wasn't any flex really. they are quite stiff.

also i covered up the camera microphone to try and reduce wind noise, so it reduced its sensitivity greatly.

i managed to get a 46.53 (not captured on video) and i noticed places where i could have made that even faster too 😀

i think the most important part is getting the right line to set yourself up for the next set of cones. on my faster laps, i tried to take a wider turn so i could carry more speed and didnt have to brake as much.

Those are decent tires, same ones I have on my MS3. You'll want to run them soft enough that they roll onto the shoulders a little bit, you'll be maximizing traction then.

Part of getting that good line is closing the gap between your tire and the cone, otherwise you're turning more and traveling further than you have to. I've learned that it's usually worth taking a tighter line and losing a little speed rather than going off-line to maintain speed because its an auto-x course and you don't need to carry speed onto straightaways.

Don't get me wrong though, that much improvement is pretty darn good for your first time autoxing!

awesome! I was purely stock when i went out for my first time this past summer...next year i'll have some suspension mods as well so it will be interesting to see the difference. i wish the events in my area had test and tune as well.

are you planning any mods?

regarding the layout - anyone else sort of get the "sea of cones" feeling from that layout? i think the designer could have done a slightly better job in some areas.

i'm going to look into what suspension setups are available. i also want to get a stage1 turbo upgrade (ECU chip + CAI. manufacturer claims its good for +45hp/+65tq). the stage1 upgrade basically maxes out the stock turbo without requiring additional intake/exhaust/fuel modification. its price is also reasonable ($850). the stage2 is $3k and stage3 is $3800. too much IMO.

there were a couple of confusing parts to the track. the worst one was a set of cones that you needed to go through twice - normally designated by double cones - but in this case you had two double cones on the left but only a single cone on the right:

|| | instead of || ||

the other one was the exit turn - when you got through the last double cone gate, you'd naturally want to head to the next set of double cones, but you needed to take a left. most people figured that one out after the first or second run.

Keep in mind that if you intend on autocrossing competitively, you may be better off staying in stock class (or if not, research what mods will put you in what class). Now if you're just going for fun, then knock yourself out. :awe:

I would suggest a slightly more aggressive alignment and some track wheels/tires for your first suspension mod. The RE050A is a good tire, but it's getting long in the tooth and there are definitely better tires out there (RS3, StarSpec, Hoosier A6 😀 etc). Way better bang/buck than a coil-over setup IMHO.

I've also gotten lost on auto-x courses where you run one part of it twice, when JLee and I co-drove an event he would yell "finish finish finish" when I needed to cross the finish line. First time I didn't have any off-course runs on an autox course setup like that.

Dollar for dollar, does anything really beat tires?

Nope, especially if there's a track or vendor near you that sells scrubs. I got lucky and scored a set of RA1s for $50 when I bought my Miata. Drove them on Black2NA's MR2-Spyder... so much grip... even at 6-7 years old all of the auto-x instructors wanted a ride in his car because it was so silly. They are going on my Miata for the next season.

yeah, tires generally are #1. i have summer/winter wheel-tire sets. the RE050A's are the tires that came with the car, so i wasn't planning on replacing them till they wear out 🙂

i was looking at the continental extremecontact DW for replacing the RE050A's, whenever that occurs. michelin PS2's are so f'ing expensive, even though they *are* good.

ahh i see the RS3/A6/R6 are all R-compound tires. absolutely they would help, but i don't think 3 wheel/tire sets would be easy to manage. i'd have to get a mini trailer just to get the wheel/tire set to the autocross event!

Your track/auto-x wheels/tires don't have to be the same size as your street wheels and tires. In fact, getting smaller diameter wheels/tires a really good way to bump performance for the track in addition to being easier to transport. I'd aim for the smallest wheels that will clear your brakes (17s? 16s?) and a tire that's significantly shorter than what you've got right now. It will sharpen up braking, steering, lower your CG, and be cheaper to buy.

But if you do bigger wheels, you can get a lower sidewall without messing up the speedometer or anything else.

I am suggesting a set of wheels/tires dedicated to auto-x. If you're looking at your speedo during an auto-x run you're doing it wrong. 😀

Whats the stock tire size on the Genesis Coupe? 17" RS3s are rediculously cheap compared to the 18" versions - 255/40/17 are around $140 while 255 or 265/35/18s are around $240.

The best thing is RS3s are street legal.. so you could put them on at home, drive to your event, drive home and put on your stock set. I did this for every track/autox event last year and this year. No need for a trailer.

18" wheels are about the smallest that will clear my brakes. some people have found 17" ones that *barely* do so, but i'd rather have guaranteed clearance than questionable clearance.

Wheels don't deflect very much. You don't need much clearance to be sure that the wheel won't hit your brakes. The 16" wheels I use for my MS3's winter tires have less than 1/16th in of clearance from my front brakes and I've never had an issue.

I just put these on my s2k. How many track events were these lasting you?

I did about 5 track events on them, and maybe 15 autocrosses (which involves traveling 80 to 150miles roundtrip). I didn't take any measurements but here's how they looked before I sold them:
