Is a muthfucka.
My cat Ginger has gone from active, playful to lethargic listless in just a matter of a week. She's dying and probably won't last another 48 hrs. :'(

This was the first Google link and it spurred many more inquiries.

Among many causes it seems there is a fungus that grows on cat food that metabolizes into a toxin that spurs the degradation of the liver. I'll bet it grows on the dried food as well as old wet food.

Watching another being die is really tough, especially a beloved pet. Makes one feel really useless.

Also sounds like FIP. Super playful to lethargic and labored breathing within days, happened to one of mine some years ago. Either is a death sentence. Condolences OP. :(

Sometimes it is kinder to help them cross the bridge rather than watch them wither. I had to help a cancer kitty cross this past spring. I miss her terribly. Sorry about your kitty. :(

never a bad time to tell your cat you love her

she could have been on the street or euthanized and you gave her life a purpose and gave her respect

if she could talk to you, i'm sure she would say thank you!

On a side note, what are you going to do when she passes?

That sucks. I've been through this with multiple pets and it never gets any easier.

I feel for you bro.

Yah, she knows...She was rescued from the Wente Winery. She was the last one to be caught from her litter. She as much picked me when we met at the shelter. Within the first week of living in the apt, she caught and brought me half a dove. She sat at the foot of my bed she staring at me like "I got this for you.Go ahead and eat, I've had mine."

What am I going to do when she passes? Cry like my heart has been broken, snivel like my baby won't be coming back ever and carry on. Such is life.

Kidney Disease took my cat, Nemo last August. I was already back at College and I couldnt be home with him when he was sick. I'd had him since 8th grade and it tore me up, I cried like a baby on the day my mom called and said the doctors told her the best thing to do was put him down.

Sorry about your pet man, losing a pet is one of the hardest things in the world. :(

This^^^

I had to put my cat to sleep 2 years ago (I had him for nearly 15 years) and I still miss having him here with me.

So sorry about your cat. :(

It's a cat. You'll get over it, trust me.

Condolences.

Why is it that when I saw this same thing about dogs, people verbally crucify me?

Anyway, yeah, sucks, but it is a cat. I'm sure there's 20 other ownerless cats in your neighborhood that'd love to eat your catfood.

Generally that sort of thing is just a thread crap. I'm glad his wasn't nested in this response.
I'll take your cynicism as an indicator of the emptiness of your soul.
I'm aware of at least 5 cats that feed at the outdoor feeders. One is A.1 All American Tom-cat stray / feral. We call him Tom, and he has let me stroke while he eats.
There's an opossum that came through last year, but I haven't seen her this year.
I likes the kitthaz, always have. Dogs are cool too, but when you're on a first name basis with a cat, you're living on a higher plain of existance.

I'm sorry about your friend. You do have an actual diagnosis from a veterinarian and not just google right?

Feline cancer is just horrible. Ours had a chest full of fluid for a few weeks and both lungs had completely collapsed, I still despise myself for not doing something sooner. On his last day, once we found out what the problem was, we had his chest emptied of the fluid and his little lungs came right back and his breathing went back to normal-ish. He was too far gone healthwise by then, but at least his last hours were slightly more comfortable.
I feel terrible for you, its a pain that never goes away. I suppose the only positive is that she'll pass with you right there with her instead of under a car or in a dog's teeth.

Really sorry to hear that, we just one of ours in July to lymphoma and are now dealing with a very elderly dog approaching her last days.

I was worried about kidney diseaese too. Sorry to hear you're sharing this angst, too.

It's really tough, right now. She seems happy, but cats hide pain very well. I don't know whether it's bad enough that putting her to sleep would be the right thing to do. She's still eating, though not as much as she used to.

I don't know if I'll be able to be with her, when the time comes. I've never lost a pet before. :(

We didn't want to dignify his idiotic response by responding to it.

My dog was taken out by lymphoma. 14 years ago. Haven't had another pet since. It is hard to deal with since they really do become part of the family. That span between 1996 and 1998 was rough for me. Lost my granddad and my beloved dog. Of course the little bastards at school had zero sympathy.
