My cat Ginger has gone from active, playful to lethargic listless in just a matter of a week. She's dying and probably won't last another 48 hrs. :'(
This was the first Google link and it spurred many more inquiries.
Among many causes it seems there is a fungus that grows on cat food that metabolizes into a toxin that spurs the degradation of the liver. I'll bet it grows on the dried food as well as old wet food.
Watching another being die is really tough, especially a beloved pet. Makes one feel really useless.
