Feels like it's a shame to pour BBQ sauce on $7.50/lb steak

JEDI

Lifer
bought beef brisket at Costco today. $7.50/lb 😱
saw it at 5.99/lb earlier this year.

ribeye is $8.99/lb.

since its so close to ribeye pricing, I thought of buying the ribeyes.
but wanted bbq beef brisket and the only reason why I went to Costco in the 1st place.

corrorary: I wouldn't pour bbq sauce on ribeyes and since beef brisket is so close in pricing, I shiouldnt pour it on brisket either

I just whipped up a batch of BBQ sauce last night for some baby back ribs I'm smoking on Saturday.

But yeah, I don't put sauce of any kind on steak usually.

I too enjoy telling other people what they should or should not do with their personal purchases; OP, you better not be drinking warm beer either!!

They are completely different cuts of beef, from completely different regions of the cow. If you left price effect what you do put on it, you're going to be sadly disappointed.

I don't use barbecue sauce on anything but french fries. Just learn to season your damned food and use pan drippings.

I've seen grown men put ketchup on expensive steaks in restaurants. Whatever floats your boat, but it's a bit like picking your nose in public. Feel free, but don't expect anyone to feel anything but disgust.

However, I think what the OP was getting at is not about uncouth eating habits, but about making BBQ out of beef that is now so damned expensive.

If you want steak, buy steak.

If you want meat slathered in BBQ sauce buy something like pork shoulder at .99 cents a pound.

Problem solved.

Pretty much. OP doesn't own any BBQ equipment to properly cook the brisket so any kind of sauce could only help it.

As much as a steak snob as I am, I do love A1 on a cheaper steak like sirloin.

But yes, beef prices are through the roof right now.

bought choice whole packer brisket at walmart for memorial day at ~$1.70/lb.

even in an area where no one sells much brisket, that seems like a high price, JEDI. is that trimmed?

agreed. on some cheaper cuts it's not bad.

I am glad i got my beef bundle early this year. the price of them have gone up in the last 2 weeks. it's insane.

Meh, to each their own, my wife grimaces as I use Heinz 57 sauce with grilled sweet onion on my steak, she says I'm a "steak wrecker" where I think I'm a "steak enhancer" LOL, in the end follow your own taste bud's OP and if the rest of humanity thinks your wrong,
FUCK THEM, ALL OF THEM,....my 2cents..

It just struck me - my son's family-in-law is from the same area you are in. His sister-in-law came out here for a visit and had good cooking at a young age. She was saved. But, the rest of the extended family prefers dried up tough meat over something juicy and tasty. Still though, it seems weird that there are good steak houses in NYC, since so many seem to have no clue about what constitutes good food.

To the OP: go for it - I've found that replacing various cuts of meat with more expensive cuts often results in an awesome culinary experience. Making steak subs with filet mignon... oh my! YUM!

All of those good steak houses are run by someone not from NYC. =)

And I envy a man that gets a steak sub with filet mignon.

It's your food, do what you want to it. If you like your meal any less because you bent to some weird social convention about what condiments to use when, then you're a pussy

I went to Le Relais de L'Entrecôte in Paris (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L'Entrecôte) and one of the girls who I was with requested her steak well done. Since I was the only one who understood French, the waitress looked at me and told me to tell her that it was not gonna happen. They should do this more in America lol.

I once took my father-in-law to Hy's steak house, which was rather expensive. He ordered a NY Strip and then asked for ketchup. The waiter looked at him like he had two heads.

If a waiter asks me if I want stake sauce I ask them if their steak is that bad and they should warn people before they order it.

It make my wife want to hide under the table.

I don't think I've ever had a waiter ask me that. Maybe you should go to better steak houses.
