I dunno. I've heard unpleasant things about the use of Flash on the mobile devices on which it does work. I kinda think Jobs might have been doing the right thing to push developers to not sure Flash.

Cells have states. The board containing the cells goes through iterations. In each iteration, the states of each of the cells on the board are affected by the states of the cells around them depending on some rules determined by the creator of the automaton. With some rule sets the evolution of the board can produce some really interesting effects - see Conway's Game of Life.
