Firefox. It's libre software, made by a company who's only goal is open standards on the web. They aren't out to make money by overt, or covert methods. I can trust it because I have the code to look at. It's highly customizable using easy addons, or at the core by tweaking source code. It isn't the fastest browser, but none of the browsers are fastest, except for the one that is. It's more than fast enough, and provides more features and freedom than any other browser.

I use Opera and have virtually tried them all over the years, reason why?...fast,stable,very customizable, and only browser that has an official 64 bit version (apart from Microsoft IE).

I still think you should look at your FF config, and maybe start from scratch. it's probably something about it that is causing crashes. most people i know don't have any issues with it. but if you really want to try something else, check out opera.

I've tried them all and still stick with FF. I can't find any that have the same range of addons and I've made my own custom modifications. With FF I have granular control over what comes through to my screen and I can easily dig into pages, for example, to see media directly or display actual links rather than obfuscated links, referrals or forwarders. I use Opera as a secondary browser.

maxthon?

there are a few other less popular browsers out there besides the ones listed.

i dont really like any of them.
i dont like the direction ff is going these days either but i see it the lesser of two evils so to speak.

i miss the old ff 2.0-3.0 days.

I use Opera, it's fast and customizable and doesn't need addons to get to a decent level of capability.

I have the same issues with Firefox as listed here and it does tend to be fixed by setting up a fresh profile but I shouldn't need to. I don't know if there's something specific I'm doing but every month or so I need to recreate my profile because it keeps crashing and not working properly. I don't really mess with settings especially because I use Opera as my primary browser now but that's why I've moved on.

I shouldn't need to restore every month or so because something keeps messing it up.

man that is crazy!
I've only had to completely reinstall firefox and all profiles 3-4 times at most. There must be something you have installed that is messing things up.
I've set up firefox for a lot of people including on a terminal server where a lot of people are using it and mostly everyone is ok.

Pretty sure Safari on Windows is dead now, so that's a non-starter.

Chrome is okay, but it's not as "light" as people like to think. You also are rather limited by what the extensions are capable of. Something like NoScript and AdBlock Plus are not possible with Chrome on the same level as Firefox.

IE is a massive security risk, and it's probably best people pretend like it's not even there. Same goes for the various shells on IE, like Maxthon. They aren't browsers, they're just different front ends on the IE rendering engine.

Opera I have used long ago and it's nice, but it seems like the developer is always kind of on a knife edge of going out of business. I like that Opera is willing to try new things, and eventually some of those ideas make it to other browsers, so I hope they stick around, but last I checked it has no real extension capability.

So that basically just leaves Firefox, or some Gecko based browser. It's not perfect, but for me, it's the only one worth considering. Chrome might well be able to unseat it if Google makes it so extensions can actually interrupt the rendering engine like they can with Firefox. NoScript and AdBlock Plus can literally prevent the rendering engine from even downloading parts of the web page. With Chrome, you are stuck with having to download the page, then the extension kicks in and reloads the page without the filtered content. Better than nothing, but given Firefox offers a far more comprehensive solution, that's where I will go.

I really hope you're talking about IE8 and previous versions, because the last time I checked Secunia, Microsoft actually bothers to patch their security holes in a timely manner instead of just releasing a new major version containing a fix (Firefox and chrome have released how many major versions since IE9 was launched? Are they really major releases?). Firefox has had more vulnerabilities discovered in 2012, and has more unpatched severe vulnerabilities than IE9.

I pretty much agree with lxskllr. Tried to get into Chrome and Opera again lately but there were just too many things I didn't like. I have been using a stripped-down version of Firefox called Pale Moon for over a month since it was suggested in this thread though:

http://forums.anandtech.com/showpost.php?p=33675867&postcount=21

Seems even better for me. The author of Pale Moon is very helpful and informative on their forum when people have questions as well.

I've used Firefox for years and always liked ti but it seems like in the last 6 months or so the quality of new versions has taken a nosedive and it is far less stable than it ever was before. Because of that Chrome is now my browser of choice, it's so mcuh faster and more stable I can't justify staying with Firefox any longer.

I will certainly give Microsoft credit for stepping up their efforts on patching IE security issues since they left IE to rot for a couple of years at version 6, and they've even improved standards support. However, until Microsoft either does away with, or fundamentally reworks ActiveX, then they're like the little boy sticking his finger in the *** to try and hold back the flood.

It's also important to look at the turnaround time on patches, where Microsoft usually lags well behind. I don't care if they call it Firefox Eleventybillion or 14.0.2, I care about the the issue being fixed. So they get credit for cleaning up their act significantly, with the obvious disclaimer that things were so bad that it isn't really saying as much as you might think.

Don't know where you get that idea from since Opera has been around for ages and no way near of going out of business, also extensions are growing on Opera https://addons.opera.com/en-gb/extensions/ (click on more button in link above for more type of extensions),as you can see plenty there.

Nowadays we are spoiled for choices when it comes to browsers.

A decade ago Opera was something else... It has really improved in the last few years though.

Chrome "gets it" (the most) if you look at it from a user perspective.

I currently use Firefox because of the plugins.
Specifically I use Waterfox (site is currently down I think).

The waterfox sourceforge page works though.

I would describe it as Firefox that doesn't suck.

Why? Is it not safe?

I've been using Firefox for years, but lately I find it slow and quite annoying. I can't tell exactly why. I'm considering moving to Chrome, but first I want to know whether it has major problems.
