Been playing FEAR for Halloween and uploading the Intervals (chapters) onto Youtube. Check my sig if interested.

As for the AI, yes it's excellent and quite persistent but such behaviors are relatively easy to program (I imagine) in a corridor shooter. Regardless, FEAR's enemies are still alot of fun to fight. Always loved how the grenades insta-burst when you hit an enemy with them :D

FEAR has alot of interesting and ground breaking stuff going for it. It was the second game that I know of to support dual-core processors (CoD2 being the first). Also in my YT channel I have a video showing off the 3D dynamic water surface simulation that exists in a few parts of the game that was beyond anything else in any game at the time with maybe the exception of Ghosthunter on the PS2. The water simulation, though low in geometry, still is beyond most late 360 and PS3 games.

As much as people knock the game for it's repetitive environments, the fights were always set up really well to show off the dynamic AI behavior and the dark & moody lighting really enhanced it I think. I don't remember FEAR 2 capturing that same feeling, as it seemed just way too silly, while the first game maintained a relatively serious tone the whole way through. It was way a decent game, but it was made to satisfy console gamers, not fans of the PC original. I haven't played FEAR 3 because I don't care.

Thanks for this... is it better to just get this instead of the $8 for FEAR 1 + 2 + 3? Sounds like FEAR 3 was just really bad.

I don't know if it's 'better' or not, but I already had 2 on Steam, 1 on disk (sans DLC), and little interest in 3; so $2.49 to get the DLC and go digital made sense for me.

Honestly, probably yes. FEAR 1 is objectively superior to it's sequels in almost every single way. 2 and 3 aren't necessarily terrible, but they never lived up to 1.

Thanks. Maybe I'll just get 1 now and 2 when it goes on sale inevitably.

Personnel is key and it shows. Craig Hubbard was the lead designer on the first, the second one he was helping out, the third one was made by a different studio.

He left Monolith sometime after the second game and formed Blackpowder games with some of the Monolith staff. They made Betrayer, a solid game but I didn't quite like it for some reason though I've enjoyed most of the games he was involved with.

I personally liked 2 a lot, FEAR 3 was just awful and felt like some awful offspring between FEAR and COD.

Keep in mind that the Expansions for Fear1 are considered non-canon to the Fear franchise.

Fear 1 > Fear 3 > Fear 2.

Fear 3 was a solid game and I've finished it twice so far. It wasn't as good as the first game but they tightened up the combat, guns and AI compared to the second game so it was closer to the first.

The visuals were fine - not the greatest, but still pleasant to look at. The game also had extremely low levels of shader aliasing, unlike most modern games which suffer badly from it.

The XP/levelling provided progression and looking for Alma's Dolls was a bit similar to finding the hyper-boosters from the first game. I also briefly tried playing as Fettel and it definitely provides a unique experience for those that want it, but I still prefer my guns.

The only real problem with the game is that the user config seems to have some kind of Windows user ID checksum on it, so you have to reload your key-bindings after a Windows reinstall, even if you restore the file.

But this is a problem in general with almost all newer games that can't seem to understand the simple concept of a config.cfg file going into the root level of the game, and not touching the thing unless I ask.

I have the disk and still have not played it. I really need to one day.

Play it this Halloween with the lights off. :D

Back when single player FPSs were actually made . . . . . . . nevermore!

True that! COD Advanced Warfare (was that the title back then?) was alright for a single player game. Ghost recon is good too.

F.E.A.R was a great game that spooked the crap out of you and had pretty damn good AI. I have yet to see a game with AI like F.E.A.R had.

I think F.E.A.R. 2 is worth playing.

What I didn't is how the story just completely jumped the shark and got.....weird.

Not weird in an interesting supernatural thriller kind of way, just weird in a "we think 12-year-olds will think this is cool" inane kind of way.

Eh I bought the $8 bundle anyway. Only cost me less than $2 for F3AR so if it sucks oh well.

I was just looking thru my Steam library wondering if any new games could provide the satisfaction of a bullet time head shot in FEAR.

I don't think so. Might have to install FEAR again. Something about the shootouts that's so satisfying in that game.

What, you mean
sexy time with Alma?

Not into that fine demonic booty? http://i.imgur.com/Qw2ENdg.jpg

Yeah....exactly. Character development in F.E.A.R. was impressive, and then F.E.A.R. 2 came along and the whole "sexy time with Alma" was just.....well....you know.

When they destroyed the story, they destroyed the game. It wouldn't have been that hard to make something amazing...but they settled for THAT. Too bad. They really could have done something amazing with this IP. :(

And yeah...Far Cry 3? Totally agree.

You know what, I'm doing the same thing. With all the games coming out every month, why do I still find myself reinstalling games like Deus Ex, Painkilller, Fear, Stalker, etc. Man, they don't make games like they used to....

It's not quite the same thing, but Max Payne 3 is really good.

This thread made me reinstall FEAR... I have all of them, but no interest in any but the first. I've beaten it on the hardest difficulty 4 or 5 times now.
