From the Associated Press:

The FDA planned to announce Thursday it will require the food industry to gradually phase out all trans fats, saying they are a threat to people's health. Commissioner Margaret Hamburg said the move could prevent 20,000 heart attacks and 7,000 deaths each year.

I read this story earlier and only saw it mentioned in a troll thread and I think this warrants its own thread to discuss. This to me is what the FDA should be doing and as we are learning just how bad trans fats are it's good for the FDA to take a stance and remove these kinds of fats from our diet.

Here's another link:

The comments are hilarious and I'm not sure why anyone would want these kinds of fats in their food. o_O

Ignorance and health care. Like Promise margarine and William Shatner.

My first reaction was how dare they regulate a normal, tasty part of food!

Then I read the DT article... oh boy.

What exactly is trans fat? It's partially hydrogenated oil that is made by bubbling hydrogen through hot vegetable oil. This transforms the liquid oil into a fat that is solid at room temperature.
So it was developed as a part of the mass production / manufacturing process? Yuck. Might be tasty but !@#$ if it's not a natural part of food and it leads to heart disease...

Glad to be rid of it?

Habit and commonality. If we grew up eating poison, we'd cheer for that too and guard it like a brother.

I guess so. The studies looking at trans fats are pretty conclusive on just how horrible this stuff is for the human heart even in extremely small amounts.

Thank God. Trans fats have truly been the scourge of civilization up till now.

i hate how they think they can pinpoint the number of heart attacks and deaths from trans fats.

theyre just doing this because someone lobbied for a replacement of transfats and the replacement will be no provably better for health than transfats.

Shouldn't be surprising. Breitbart is a place for people who will believe any lie so long as it's critical of the President and won't believe any truth that's critical of the right or complimentary of the President. It's a place for people who've already made up their mind and don't want it interrupted by trivial things like facts.

Nothing I saw in that link implied that it may be worse. What are you basing that on?

The fact that things like transfats and teflon were approved for use in foods before we knew that they were monumantally bad for you, a growing course of events in the wide wide world of american processed / prepared foods.

That's not a very good reason.

It's a good reason to be skeptical. It's not a good reason to jump to conclusions and say that it IS dangerous, but that's not what he said. He said it MAY be dangerous. We shouldn't be adding shit like this to our food until we really know what the hell is going on.

I agree that we should better understand what we are putting in our bodies, but 'may be more dangerous' certainly implies that there's some reason to believe that it is more dangerous. I didn't see one in his link.

Transfat has demonstrated problems. Teflon? No, at least not if used as intended. Burning PTFE probably isn't a really good idea though.

No expert on transfat but it would be interesting to compare the transfat content in McDonalds USA vs Sweden. For some reason I get very ill if I eat McDonalds in the states but I'm ok over here. Sweden hasn't banned transfat just yet but I think McDonalds has reduced their transfat over here but not in the USA. For all I know there could be other differences though.
