Half-Life 2 is easily the best game overall from a story, polish, and overall gameplay perspective. Half-Life 1 gets my vote though because it holds a special spot in my heart for how game-changing it was to the FPS genre for it's time.

edit: Side note I find it interesting that TF2 is winning this poll. Back in it's day HLDM, CS 1.6, and TFC pretty much monopolized online FPS gaming. It was ridiculous how popular they were, especially CS.

Even though the old valve games may have had a larger percentage of the PC gamers back then, that doesn't mean they're better than the new games. People just have a lot more decent options these days, whereas back then shooters were just finding their stride in multiplayer.

I loved Half-Life 2, it's a really engaging game, Episode 1 wasn't all that special but Episode 2 was pretty amazing.

HL2 is good
Never tried Day of Defeat or Team Fortress
Lefr 4 Dead is extremely disappointing.
