Oh lord...................... Super Bowl ??? Star-Spangled Banner -> the worst attempt I have ever heard.

I would have to say Patricia Barber and she's a Chicagoan too. Talk about Ethereal, especially live. Goosebump territory for sure! Holly Cole is great and I really dig Sarah McLachlin (I met her actually about 10 years ago when she was touring for her Solace album). I also like (in no particular order) Tori Amos, Shirley Manson of Garbage, Liz Phair, Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth, Chrissy Hynde of the Pretenders, Patti Smith, Aimee Mann (as a soloist), Lucinda Williams, Bjork, Fionna Apple, Polly Jean Harvey, Kim Deal of the Pixies and later the Breeders, Kate Pierson from the B-52's, Courtney Love, Debbie Harry, Leona Ness, Margo Timmins of the Cowboy Junkies, Johnette Napolitano of Concrete Blonde, Gwen Stefani of No Doubt, Enya, On the same vein as Enya, Loreena McKennitt, Sinead O'Connor (simply amazing live).

Geez.. I hope I'm not missing any. I love music, what can I say? 😉 Oh.. I like to watch Brittney Spears, only I like to hit the mute on the tv when I do. 😉

I'd have to say Faith Hill. I love her voice and she is definitely one of, if not the most beautiful, women in the world....natural beauty.

I also really like Sarah McLachlan.

Gotta be Faith Hill and Christina Aguilera. Beautiful natural voices and natural beauty. C-A doesn't "digitally enhance" her voice like Britney Spears. She also doesn't artificially enhance her physical appearance. 😛 Faith Hill is probably the most underrated female vocalist. She has a very good voice but because she's partly into country music, she's not "as popular" as the other girls.

It's all stupid stereotypes...

That's really tough because there are so many good female vocalists out there, but if I had to pick one I'd say Utada Hikaru.🙂 She has an excellent voice and since she's from NYC, she sings excellent in English as well as in Japanese.

WHAT ARE YOU PEOPLE SMOKING!?!?!?! Mariah Carey might look like a hooch, but she has 1000X more vocal talent that any of those singers. Not to mention she writes, and produces her own music (unlike every other singer mentioned, except madonna). If you listen to the songs that she has never released as singles, you would also realize that she has TONS of writing talent!

Sinead Lohan
Emmylou Harris
Lucinda Williams
Patty Griffin
Erin McKeown
Patty Larkin

Oh...and take away the production from Mariah and you've got pretty much nothing.

Oh...and how could I forget the likes of:
Peggy Lee
Etta James
Nina Simone

Don't know if I have a favorite. But I'd have to mention Shirley Manson from Garbage, Fiona Apple, and Bjork. There are many female vocalists with great vocal talent, but if the music they're singing to sucks, then I'd have to disqualify them from being "favorites".

Natalie Merchant
Alanis Morissette
Sarah McLachlan

There is certainly a disproportionate supply of female vocal talent from this side of the border.

<< Jewel - Incredible vocals and great folk guitar (except her new album sucks). Anyone ever heard her yodel? WOW! >>

not to mention HOT!

<< ooh ooh, I like Erykah Badu a lot >>

Uh oh - You better call tyrone! Because you can't use my phone!

Tori Amos is #1.

The rest:
Liz Phair
Suzanne Vega
Kristen Hersh (Throwing Muses)
Juliana Hatfield
Joan Osbourne
Chan Marshall (Cat Power)
Carla Bozulich (Geraldine Fibbers)
Jane Jensen
