I always find it somewhat amusing how elitist people are about their food. If you're not eating an exact replica of the foreign dish, somehow it's "garbage." There's probably a socialogical study here about food as a measure of racial pride. :p

American Pseudo-Chinese: Chicken and Broccoli in Garlic Sauce.

Authentic Chinese: Cantonese BBQ Roast Duck with Rice.

pho is very good, but sometimes you just got a hankering for some chinese dish that comes with mad gravy like beef with mushrooms.

Like Thai or Japaneese food better but:
Pork Fried Rice.
Any shrimp or seafood dish.
No beef dish.

Want to know how I pick a good oriental restaurant? No disrespect meant.

If the bathroom is clean the food is usually pretty bad. The dirtier the bathroom, the better and more authentic? the food.

Hasnt failed me yet.

that's if they let you use their washroom. i know alot of good places that does not let you use the washroom. another washroom test is to see how small it is. if you can cram 2 people in there, then its not a good restaurant. if there is a seperate male/female washroom then its not good. this is if you go to the little restaurants. of course if you go to huge banquet hall type restaurants then these do not apply. The BEST way to see if its a good restaurant is if it's filled up with CHINESE PEOPLE pouring out into the street.

no, it really is true. If you've ever eaten at a good chinese restaurant, you'd know this. I'm a pretty white washed chinese guy, I don't believe in that racial pride crap, but I've had chinese food both ways, and the bastardized way is terrible. I'd much prefer to eat at in-n-out over having wannabe chinese.

Haven't had roast duck in so long. Man that stuff is good. :)

Since I'm away from home for school, I really miss the real chinky chinese food. You can't even go into a restaurant here and order beef and bitter melon (foo gwa) with black bean sauce. :)

OK, I agree that there are lot of bad restaurants whose sweet and sour chicken is McNuggets in red syrup, and tastes horrible. But they're not all that way. And whether they're authentic or not I have no idea, but a couple places around here make a really good sesame chicken.

<< bitter melon >>

god that stuff is so nasty. How can people stand to eat it? When my friends or family eat it, I cringe.

Beef with oyster sauce, over white rice. Also sesame orange chicken with white rice and a dipping sauce of 2/3 sweet soy sauce and 1/3 duck sauce.

LOL, it's good dammit!! :p

Actually I only like it when they put a very tiny bit of sugar in when they stir fry it, to lessen the bitterness. Without any sugar, it's usually too bitter for me. Also, stuffed bitter melon is great. Hollow out the inside, cut it into small rings, stuff the inside with seasoned pork, and steam it. I'd like to see any restaurant carry that. :)

Heheh. Actually, like I said, I don't mind "chop suey" if it isn't too greasy. But until you've had good Chinese food, you don't know what you're missing. Also, one my fave restaurants near my place makes "fake" Chinese food (fusion). (Damn expensive though.) It's sort of like Italian pasta. My (Italian) friend gave me her recipe and some home-canned tomatoes. I just followed the recipe and I was amazed at the difference in taste compared to the usual schtuff. And my friends still make me pick up Ukranian sausage in my home town (which is VERY Ukranian), to carry half way across the country, because their local stuff just ain't as good. Yummm.........

It's not take out but when I was in Beijing, I went to a really humongous 'Peking' Duck resturant. They only served Peking Duck & the place fit at least 2000 people. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm :)

Cheers,
