I understand what you're saying, but one can have no opportunities and still not go around killing other people. I get this sort of response often whenever I discuss this issue with my friends. My response to them is that black people are not the only people to have been oppressed in American or even world society. Chinese people were legally banned from entering this country, were basically used as slaves to build the railroads, and yet you do not see poor Chinese people going around robbing and stealing.
Obviously I am simplifying things here, but these are all truths in our society. I also want to make clear that this isn't just a race issue. It just happens that a lot of "that" demographic in Oakland is black, it doesn't mean all black people are like that.
Inner city issues are complex, and won't be solved with more guns, or less guns, or more welfare, or less welfare. Honestly, they need to be more than props for pushing political agendas before we can make any progress, IMHO.
