Well, there is that theory about bystanders, how the more people there are, the less they are likely to help. You know, each guy is waiting for someone else to do something, no one feels personally responsible. So, if you're in danger, you're better off asking individuals for help rather than a crowd.

Sad but that's actually fairly true. I've learned about it in a few sociology and psychology classes.

do I sense a racist here?

Anyone here that says that the guy that nothing shouldn't feel an ounce of guilt for various reasons should realize that it could come back and haunt them. Leaving a person to die without doing anything can seriously fawk with your conscience if it happens to you or someone you know and love.

That is just pathetic. I somewhat believe what goes around comes around and I truly hope that something happens to each and every one of those people, and that they find themselves in a similar situation.

Just sickening.

running away from the scene from fear is one thing, but finishing pumping gas and paying, then leaving is another :|

I really want to say something rude to you right now... but I will refrain because you probably wouldn't even understand it.

[rant mode on]People are fvcking self centered, selfish, & frightened, in the hospital setting I work in, we respond to medical emergencies that are within appx 1/4 mile of our ED (on the grounds) and EVERY TIME, there are trained, health care professionals standing around or watching some poor soul suffer, I've seen nurses, pharmacists, ACLS instructors standing around, afraid to touch the victim. The only folks I respect in emergency settings are the medical students residents, & physicians (& they don't know what the hell they're doing, but @ least they try)[/rant mode off]

Welcome to D.C. :(

If it happened to Kitty Genovese in NY a few decades ago... 9/11 hasn't changed the guy that pumped his gas and left :|:|:|
At least call emergency services!!!!

That guy _should_ be taken in under good samaritan laws... somehow, I doubt it though. :(

Apparently, some of you who posted did not bother reading the entire thread, or more specifically, my post, or that of others who basically said:

THERE IS NO LEGAL DUTY TO ASSIST INJURED PEOPLE.

You may disagree with the law and the ethics involved, but STOP with the "they should arrest that guy who drove away" comments already.

This is true. There aren't even any laws that require police/ambulance/fire dept to respond to injuries/emergencies.

It isnt because they didnt care.

If I was in the same situation, obviously I would like to help but there are a few reasons why I'd give it a second thought:

I dont know him, I dont know why he got shot. I dont want to get anywhere near a gang war. I dont know if the person who shot him is going to come back around and shoot me for trying to help. DC isnt exactly a nice place to be. For all I know this is some drug dealer crackhead who is really better off dead.

The point is, I dont know him, I dont want to know him, and I dont want to get involved and put MYSELF in danger for something that has absolutely nothing to do with me.

This wasnt a hit and run, he got SHOT. When bullets start flying, I'M OUT! I am quite amazed that the guy finished pumping his gas.

So basically what I would have done in the situation and I'm not afraid to admit it:
Drop the gas pump, get in my car and get the fvck out of there!

This is probably why the so-called "DC sniper" only actually shot one person in DC.
