Fatal 44 shots of tequila served to boy
February 12, 2008 - 10:20AM

Two bartenders were convicted of grievous bodily harm by a Berlin state court on Monday for their role in serving at least 44 shots of tequila to a 16-year-old German boy who died after the drinking binge.

The court sentenced the two men, aged 21 and 18, to 10 months of social training.

A third bartender was acquitted while the trial for a fourth bartender, who is facing more serious charges of bodily harm with fatal consequences, has not yet started.

The 16-year-old boy got into a drinking contest against a bartender. But the four tricked the boy. While the bartender was drinking water, the 16-year-old was drinking schnapps. After 25 rounds he fell into a coma.

The boy was in the coma in a Berlin hospital for five weeks before he died of circulation problems last March.

The bar workers expressed regrets in court for their actions.

The case triggered a national debate over teenage alcohol abuse and the danger of "flat-rate" binge-drinking parties where customers pay a one-off entry fee and are served unlimited strong spirits all night.

You really should know slightly better at 16. And flat-rate drinking parties sound awesome!

However, in evaluating my response I should also note I also had to stifle laughter at the sentence, "After 25 rounds he fell into a coma." It made it sound like he kept going for another 19 rounds after that...while in the coma. Then I imagined him lying prone on the floor and a bar worker pouring shots into his mouth while laughing maniacally. I might not be a very nice person. :p

By my reckoning, the kid had 26 shots of schnapps and 44 shots of tequila. That's 70 oz of liquor. That is almost 2 lbs of alcohol. Forget Blood Alcohol Content, if he weighed 150lbs, he had a Body Alcohol Content of 1.3%.

Kudos to the kid for lasting as long as he did.

p.s. the reporters editor needs to hire better fact checkers...

I hate to say this. This awful news probably bought more business for the restaurant.

If the boss is not in jail already that is!

Yeah, a big WTF at the article. I think I've seen better writing and facts-checking on TheSuperficial.

But poor dumb kid. And those dumbass bartenders.... I don't think they meant malice; but how could bartenders not know about liquor poisoning?

1 fifth of tequila(18-19 shots) in a short time span will fuck you up real good.

Maybe you did. :) I never had any concept of invincibility. I always had a presence of mind that said I was vulnerable to damage from any number of hazards. Even when it came time to learn to drive, I was hesitant. I didn't do it until I was 18, when my parents basically forced me to learn to drive. I was quite nervous about it. I'd never controlled anything so massive before, and certainly not at such high speeds. Then there were the multiple sources of incoming information to worry about - other vehicles moving around, road signs, traffic signals, controlling the car, etc. It was a quite daunting task to deal with, and I wanted no part of it. Even now that I've been driving for almost 8 years, I still don't really care for it.

On the subject of invincibility though, I did things that most people would freak out about. I once stripped the wires of a lamp cord to see how much of a spark I could get from an outlet by grazing the wires together. I think I might have been in 5th grade. I knew there was a breaker box, I knew not to force the wires together or else they might spot-weld themselves together and possibly heat up if the breaker wouldn't trip, and I surely knew not to touch any of the metal. BIG sparks. :D I only did it once though, partly out of the curiosity, partly because I didn't like the noise, and partly because it scared the hell out of my mom when she found out what I was doing. I didn't see any danger though, because I knew full well what not to touch, and that touching the metal parts would be a very bad thing.
