Fat people should pay for two seats on a flight.

considering the pure tonage of the plane + cargo, I can't see a few people who weigh 350 really causing a real fuel drain with an extra ~150 pounds.

though by that logic, people with don't check any baggage and only have 1 small carry-on like me whenever they fly should get a discount, which would be nice 🙂

You got a point there. However, if they take up 1 1/2< seats, shouldn't they for the 1/2<?
How would you like to get hugged by the fatlards for 5+ hours?

Airlines should require fat people that bitch about buying two seats to sit next to the numerous little kids that are on every plane.. kids take up less space.

I sat next to a fat woman once - so fat she couldn't fit completely in the seat. Even though I had an isle seat, she talked me into giving it up since there was no possible way she could get in the window seat. The one time I had to use the bathroom, she caused such a fuss about me making her get up just so I could get out.. God.. I didn't even make a fuss about not having a left armrest or the fact that my right ribs were hurting from how her girth forced me to one side of my seat..

Why shouldn't fat people have to pay more? If they don't, then all we're doing is making things more fair for fat people and less fair for everyone else.

the kids and I flew to NY in august.. we got on the plane, my daughter and her boyfriend in the row in front of us, my son and I behind.. this reallllly large man came and sat down in the row in front of my daughter.. really large, he filled both seats. then I got distracted and next thing I knew the flight attendant was doin' her pre-flight stuff and there was a woman in the seat with the really large man and I thought whoa.. that's gotta be uncomfortable but they appeared to know each other, so it was OK..

then the flight attendant asked the girls sitting across the aisle from them if the'd move back to the row beside me which happened to be empty and they did, no problem, and the woman that was sitting with the man got up and moved over into the seats they'd just vacated and she was darned near as large as the man, I was just flabbergasted, I have NO idea how they both managed to fit in that seat, they musta each been more off the seat than on it.. and there was just no way seatbelts were gonna happen with both of 'em wedged in there but thank goodness there was an empty row because good lord, that could not have been a comfortable flight for them and you'd think it woulda seriously unbalanced the plane, they had to be well over 300 lbs each.. more than that maybe, I'm not good at judging that stuff but they were huge! the woman had a little room in her double seat but the man completely filled 'em both.

so I'm inclined to say they shoulda bought 2 seats each, but, I guess as long as they're willing to squeeze into two together.. if it's not unsafe for flying the plane, if they're willing to be that miserable to save some bucks, it's not for me to say they can't?

but heaven help the person who had to share a three seat row with 'em on some other flight..

actually.. I think if you can't get in and out of the seat with the arm rests down.. then you should buy two tickets. kinda like if your carryon doesn't fit in the under the seat or over the seat place then you gotta check it. if your rump doesn't fit in the seat, then you need to buy 2.

It depends on how fat ....
Many "fat people" can fit just fine in a single buisness class, economy plus, or first class seat .. so they should just pay for one of those. However, if they overflow the seat still, then they should have to pay for 2 seats.
I am not discriminating against fat people, since I qualify as one...
though for me, my shoulders and height are more important factors in determing my seating on an airplane (6 feet 2 inches tall, I have a very heavy build, even when I wasn't fat, but now I have a sizable gut too)

EDIT:
so to be fair, very tall people should have to pay more for seats with more legroom, and bodybuilders who don't fit into one seat, but are technically still thin, should also be required to pay for the extra seat if needed....

Thanks for the responds. About time an overweight person came out.

I have to say the topic is more about the discomfort of the person setting next to the overweight person. Tall, thin, people don't bother people setting NEXT to them. If they want more leg room, they can upgrade their seats. That make sense.

There is nothing worse than a 6 hour flight next to tubbo, who is breating heavy and taking up the entire armrest without trying.

Nothing against fat people in general, same reason i dont want to sit next to a giant football player either.

they also pass more gas ewwww:cookie:

charging double is stupid because airlines cram too many seats into their planes on purpose.

i'm 6/3, 230, and I don't even fit in those goddamn sardine cans...

well upgrade your tickets then.

If they're *that* fat, yes. I've got broad enough shoulders that I usually take up the armrest- it doesn't help that the airplane has 2" wide armrests in the first place- are we supposed to have 2 people sharing 2" of armrest comfortably? Most of the time I'm on my laptop anyway. On A320s, I can just barely fit my legs into the seat because the seat pitch is so small. I'm not that far from average, and I have a lot of trouble. I think that airline seats should be bigger, just for comfort. If you're a pencil neck geek who never grew much because there's no light in your mother's basement, fine. Let others enjoy the extra room and maybe some range of movement too.

For that matter, why should my tax dollars go towards maternity wards in federally funded hospitals? After all, I can't have a baby.

One of the fundamental principles of this country is that, for the most part, costs are distributed. This bleeds over into semi-private sector business as well. If you're going to push for this one change, why not go all out? Or is it just fat air travelers you have something against?

Cause you were probably born in one?

I think it should be about waist size like lets say the airline says a single seat can fit someone with waist size 40 and under but if you are over then you need to pay for 2 seats.

On a more serious note (actually that was serious) I think they should be charged on both points. If you physically can't fit in one seat you should have to buy another. Of course if there aren't two seats available you should have to catch another flight. No reason for the airline to just collect the money based on the comfort of other passengers and then seat you anyway.

You should also be charged for weight over the acceptable range for your height whether you are heavy from lifting weights or jelly doughnuts. The extra weight adds to both fuel cost and pollution. Also there could come a point where our fatness causes flying to not be competitive with other forums of transportation after sharing the cost and people say ****** it I'll just drive.

Did you get her fat digits? That would make a good "how we met" story to tell your fat grandkids one day.

I'm now 6'3" and 255 pounds with a 35 inch waist. I am not fat, but I wouldn't mind paying a bit more for my ticket. It just makes sense.

I'm 5'11" or so (can't remember, and haven't checked in years), and weigh around 245-250 pounds. Yeah, I'm definitely overweight, but I still do not have a problem fitting in an airline seat, without "spilling over" into any seat(s) on either side of me.

they should pay based on width. i hate having to sit next to fatties on planes. NO, YOU CAN'T HAVE MY PEANUTS. STOP LEANING ON ME!
/pointless rant

Ok also, imagine in an emergency on a 737 or A319. The fat people would plug the small emergency exits on the wings. I can just picture them with their torso plugging the exit, kicking their legs, in a comical fashion.

Do you think fat people should pay for they extra space? Why or why not?

LMFAO, that is really mean :/
