Fastest Notebook HD?

My laptops harddrive just died. I had planned on replacing it anyway, but I was wondering where I could find out what the fastest HD I could put in it would be? Thanks

What's the interface of the drive? ATA-6 or SATA?

If it's SATA, there is at least one 200GB, 7200RPM drive which would definitely be the fastest drive. The largest drives are 250GB 5400RPM drives, which should be pretty fast as well, but not as fast as the previously mentioned drive.

If it's ATA-6, the largest drives in the 7200RPM style are 100GB. There is a 200GB+ ATA-6 drive available which will probably be the fastest because of the platter density being so much greater than the 100GB, 7200RPM drive.

I have that drive, a Hitachi Travelstar 200 GB/7200 RPM. It replaced a 160 GB/5400 RPM drive and is definitely faster. I liked the drive so much I got a second one to have as a duplicate spare.

I recommend you try to get this deal - you can get the Hitachi7K200 (the fastest laptop HD on the market), in an external enclosure, for $140. I got one at the second BB store I tried, about a week and a half ago.

That is the right drive - the 7K200. It's really a shame to put a drive like that in a USB enclosure and strangle it. Should be in a eSATA enclosure. So, if you get this deal, you are doing two things - getting a good fast drive for your laptop, and liberating the drive from low level servitude. 🙂

Caveat lector...

BestBuy has the external USB 2.5 200gb HDD on sale for $139.99. It's classified as a 5400rpm drive but...

some of the packages actually contain 7200rpm drive, 7k200.

These packages s/n starts with letters DTG or DEG...

all others appear to have 5400rpm drives.

Good thing to point out here Vin, but the linked thread also mentioned this.

Yep! It mentioned a lot of stuff, but...

This is another case of someone trying to get something for nothing, e.g. not the brightest bulbs on the tree!

So, I thought I'd mention it... 😉

Agreed. The first BB store I went to didn't have any DTG drives, but the second one did, and it is now serving happily in my MacBook.

But also something to consider - the drives from BB won't have the same warranty length as buying the OEM drive off of Newegg.

True, but the warranty isn't worth $60 to me. I have always found the hassle of a HD going down is a much bigger deal than the cost of the drive, and one of these days I will get another external drive and start using Time Machine to cure that as well.

Besides, who wants to be down for 3-4 days, waiting for a new drive to arrive? 🙂
