My laptops harddrive just died. I had planned on replacing it anyway, but I was wondering where I could find out what the fastest HD I could put in it would be? Thanks
I have that drive, a Hitachi Travelstar 200 GB/7200 RPM. It replaced a 160 GB/5400 RPM drive and is definitely faster. I liked the drive so much I got a second one to have as a duplicate spare.Originally posted by: Brainonska511
If it's SATA, there is at least one 200GB, 7200RPM drive which would definitely be the fastest drive. . . .

I recommend you try to get this deal - you can get the Hitachi7K200 (the fastest laptop HD on the market), in an external enclosure, for $140. I got one at the second BB store I tried, about a week and a half ago.
BestBuy has the external USB 2.5 200gb HDD on sale for $139.99. It's classified as a 5400rpm drive but...
some of the packages actually contain 7200rpm drive, 7k200.
These packages s/n starts with letters DTG or DEG...
all others appear to have 5400rpm drives.

Yep! It mentioned a lot of stuff, but...
This is another case of someone trying to get something for nothing, e.g. not the brightest bulbs on the tree!
So, I thought I'd mention it... 😉

But also something to consider - the drives from BB won't have the same warranty length as buying the OEM drive off of Newegg.
True, but the warranty isn't worth $60 to me. I have always found the hassle of a HD going down is a much bigger deal than the cost of the drive, and one of these days I will get another external drive and start using Time Machine to cure that as well.

Besides, who wants to be down for 3-4 days, waiting for a new drive to arrive? 🙂
