Here is a link to a Drive speed comparison page(page loads a little slow-click on the details link on the right side of the chart for more info about the drive). The Kenwood is no longer available as it has been discontinued. As for how quiet they are, it isn't really mentioned in the reviews of the drives.
Although the Kenwood is hands down the fastest IDE drive out there (if you *really* want a rad drive, get a SCSI card and a plextor drive =), it has a hard time reading CD-R's and flat out won't read CD-RW's.
The Kenwood is also supposedly virtually silent; the one this site reccomends (the Afreey CD-2056E) isn't silent, but is supposedly fairly quiet.
<< Why are you getting a CD-ROM? Most burners and dvd's read cd's at least 40x. >>
I agree. Why get a straight CD-ROM when for a llittle more $$$ you can get a CD-RW or DVD-ROM and increase your versatility. Most of these will read at 40X or better now which is more than sufficient for any programs that I have seen run from the CD-ROM.
The Kenwood 72x was the slowest drive I've ever used..... when it worked! I even had it replaced with a brand new one shipped from japan. Read some older threads about all the owners of this drive bitching up a storm!
