Fastest CD-ROM?

Anybody have an opinion on what the fastest AND quietest CD-ROM on the market is? I was looking at the Sony and Lite-on 52x on Newegg. Anybody?

Here is a link to a Drive speed comparison page(page loads a little slow-click on the details link on the right side of the chart for more info about the drive). The Kenwood is no longer available as it has been discontinued. As for how quiet they are, it isn't really mentioned in the reviews of the drives.

Although the Kenwood is hands down the fastest IDE drive out there (if you *really* want a rad drive, get a SCSI card and a plextor drive =), it has a hard time reading CD-R's and flat out won't read CD-RW's.

The Kenwood is also supposedly virtually silent; the one this site reccomends (the Afreey CD-2056E) isn't silent, but is supposedly fairly quiet.

I also wanted something that was reasonable priced, unlike the 72x. I'll have to look at that affrey. Thanks for the suggestions!

<< Why are you getting a CD-ROM? Most burners and dvd's read cd's at least 40x. >>

I agree. Why get a straight CD-ROM when for a llittle more $$$ you can get a CD-RW or DVD-ROM and increase your versatility. Most of these will read at 40X or better now which is more than sufficient for any programs that I have seen run from the CD-ROM.

I wanted a CD-ROM to save a few bucks. I already have a 16x CD-RW and don't have any use for DVD. Thanks

I got the Afreey 56x CD-ROM (2056E) for 30 bucks. It's good.

The only issue that I have is that XP recognizes the CD-ROM mode as PIO. I thought it should be DMA.

Anyone knows the deal with this?

The Kenwood 72x was the slowest drive I've ever used..... when it worked! I even had it replaced with a brand new one shipped from japan. Read some older threads about all the owners of this drive bitching up a storm!
