How about a 95' Buick Roadmaster? The thing is a beast. 5.7 Liter 260HP V8.

Do you really have 20-23K cash? If so, then a lot of these suggestions are nice. However, if you are looking to finance you just limited your options greatly, as, banks are only going to finance what the loan value is of any vehicle, so you can' get 23K to finance a $2000 Beat 67 Chevelle and add 21K in upgrades to it. Same for newer cars, you could buy a $5000 Dodge Neon and add a stage III turbo for $4-5K and have a 12s car that handles well too. But, the chicks won't dig it, and the bank still won't finance the turbo so you'd need to come up with the mod cash.

Thus, for financeable performance a recent generation musclecar (camaro or 'stang) would, imho, give you the best bang for the buck in acceleration. Be sure to budget in for insurance, tires, and gas.

Turkey:

why go through all the hassle of paying and installing a turbo, dyno-testing, caliburating on an engine that Subaru itself didn't bother to, when you can pay about the same price of an 2.5 RS + Turbo for the whole complete package of an WRX.

reliability would be one issue, if the turbo breaks or simply needs maintence the only place you can get it fix is from where you bought the turbo, where as with the WRX you can get it maintained at any dealer and most mechanic shops.

a new 2002 Impreza RS MSRP is 19,000
the WRX's is 24000. that is with a turbo in a better engine which yield more upgrade possibilities and options. beside, the WRX has LSD and slightly better brakes.

so why not get a WRX in the beginning so you could possibilty save some money for more performance and most importantly, a peace of mind.

If speed is your goal and used is an option, for that budget you're best off getting a slightly used Z28 or SS Camaro, or even a 5.0 mustang with some engine work done. If you insist upon imports as do many here, a MKIV Supra Twin Turbo can be had for that price range with around 50k miles, that's 330hp, about the same as the Camaro. But you could find the stang/camaro a LOT cheaper chances are, and put the money into the engine.

Radeon - '95 Cobras aren't all that great. Once they switched over to the SN95 the 5.0 isn't as great of an engine as it was in the Fox Body. A 96 (first year with the 281) can be had for a grand or two more plus you have a rather solid base to start from.

I'm not sure how the supply/demand and dealers are in your area, but here in the SF bay area you can get a WRX for invoice ($21977 before destination). I was quoted that price just last week when I went out for a test drive. You could try shopping around to see if any of the dealers in your area need to get the 2002's off their lot to make way for the 03's.

No offense to some of you here, but a lot of the cars that you're mentioning (Integra's, Jetta's, etc.) most of that stuff doesn't break 200 HP, and won't come NEAR the 300+ HP of a nice Camaro SS/Z28, which can be found used for that price. Trans Am's and Cobra Mustangs would also be faster for the price.

if you're into speed only, a used Z28, otherwise i'd settle for a used type R.
I thought the 300ZX TT was pretty quick.

Top Speed - 155.0 mph / 249.4 kph
Lateral Acceleration - 0.91g
0 - 60 mph - 5.5 seconds
0 - 100 mph - 14.6 seconds
¼ Mile - 14.1 seconds

How fast is the Type R?
(Oh, did you mean Civic or Acura?)

It's like any enthusiasts car... sometimes people want to move on from their car and with mods a car is worth nothing to a dealer. There are a bunch of Subaru enthusiasts going from tricked 2.5RS's to the WRX, and selling their 99, 00, and 01 RS for between $14k and $18k with suspension & exhaust upgrades, sometimes w/turbo. The reason to do it is because a 2.5 turbo is faster than a 2.0 turbo, even when the 2.5 runs 5lb of boost peak and the 2.0 runs 15lbs peak. It's something to do if aftermarket is your thing... and if aftermarket is your thing then you won't really care about reliability. To clarify, in my post about picking the RS I meant stock, not with a turbo. IMO it's the best combo of cost, speed, handling, and versatility for this guy.

I know the 95' wasn't good in stock form. It has tremendous tuning capacity because of the 302 though.

My friend raced a stock one when he had a slighly modded '99 Prelude... the guy in the 'Stang was so pissed when he couldn't even inch on us :D
