used Integra Type-Rs could be had from anywhere between 17-20k, the last generation 2.5rs is also a good buy, could be had just under 20k.

I would go for the 2.5rs, just for the beauty of all wheel drive :)

Used will get you a very nice 2 year old Mustang Cobra or Camaro SS, or Firebird w/ the Ram Air Package. Might even be able to find a late gen corvette in that range.

Though I'd go with the Fbody/Mustang for insurance reasons and a practicality standpoint. If you are into trucks, you could get a 99'ish Lightning SVT.

Pontiac Grand Prix GTP (240 hp supercharged). In 2001 my friend bought a 2000 used GTP for $19,000 with tax and it had under 500 miles on it.

One other suggestion - previous gen BMW M3's.

If you're into some torque and insist that it's a new car, order up a 4.7+5 speed Dakota. Not as fast as the Mustangs or F bodies, but a tad bit faster than alot of the rice in the quarter. (ie: Acura RSX) Upto about 1/8th mile they can keep close to Mustangs but the game changes from a torque game to power after that. (I held about 2-3 car lengths until the 1/8th when I was lined up against a Cobra when it started to pull away). The reason I went for mine instead of a Firebird was the costs for my area made the 'bird $5k over budget and the insurance would KILL me, the Dakota is classified as a compact truck.

If you don't mind used, you can't beat the muscle cars.

find a 60's chevy truck. (or maybe a ElCamino or Impala or chevelle or camaro, etc.)

add 350 or 454 (depending how much room & effort you have) + blower + 9" rearend + big rims in the back

add paintjob

add stereo

add whatever

have alot of money left.

Oh, The Stage III that I saw was stickered at $47,000, so I'm pretty sure this auction is going to go a little bit higher :)

For a new suggestion - Look for a VW GTi 337, or for a bit cheaper, the new 24V VR6 GTi's.

Either of those cars will bitch slap that anemic Matrix.

if you want something new and fast...
i'd say wrx.

if used is okay..
go get yourself a muscle car then mod it.

there's no better way to get the power you want for the money.
