Faster PDF-browsing with Adobe (Acrobat) Reader 6

Yes, the start up time is much longer. Actually, I think even Photoshop starts up faster, lol. However I'd take that over the sloppy scrolling/image-by-image re-rendering behavior any time.

This is just an update for the reader!

Yes, 5 was soooo slooow that I went back to 4. It was funny to see the bragscreen with all those stupid names before it opens the document eventually. I would not want my name to be on that screen, it's a disgrace.

And now the "start" takes ages, so what's the improvement really, timewise!

Back to the good ol' 4.x .

Anyone know if the full version of 6 is available, and if not, when it will be? I'd consider looking at the PDF writing capabilities of 6 if/when it is released.

Can't tell how fast V6 is because it takes FOREVER just to load up the program. I'll stick with V5 for plain old viewing.

"Adobe Acrobat 6.0 Professional is now available." from their website, linkie. Too steep for me though, $449US, unless you qualify for an upgrade price.

Hmm...you guys are wierd.....JK

I work support at my company....we are running laptops and desktops from P2-300's upto P4-2.2ghz, along with Windows 2000 Pro and XP pro. Acrobat reader current version at system build time....so Version 3.0 upto 5.5....soon to be 6.0

Acrobat reader is standard install on all systems.....it only takes a few seconds to open, a few more if launching the IE browser plug-in.

Can't believe all of you are having that much of a problem opening Acrobat Reader......

Looks like Acrobat Standard will be the PDF creation tool of choice, but I"m going to look into a enterprise agreement for the elements....need to do some cost analysis.....fun fun.

My useless $.02

Hope this version is less crash prone then 5. I can never open more than three windows with PDF files (like in the case of looking at Fry's ads) without having AR and IE crash on me requiring a restart. God I hate IE 6, AR, XP, etc...... (but at least it's much better than running Me with IE and AR).

Overall, I like Adobe software. The only thing that I hate is the start up time. Most of their software take quite some time to load.

I can't find any info of the difference between the basic/stripped down verion

I hate that slow startup! 5 is bad, can 6 be worse? I wonder if 4 would be a better choice. As it is, my 5 right now only opens 20% of the time when I click on a web page pdf link. So I'll try 6 to fix that.

Here is the link for the BASIC (less bloated) version for all version of windows (apparently):
http://ardownload.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/win/6.x/6.0/enu/AdbeRdr60_enu.

vs the full version ? the one post in the 2nd msg ..

anyone ?

It's noticeably faster on my AthlonXP 2000+.

AR5 used to take half a minute to render a Compusa PDF ad. Now it only takes a second. Also, scrolling (and the resulted re-rendering) is much smoother.

Nice post. The PDF's display much faster, but OMFG, why does this version take so much longer to load than Acrobat 5???

my friend has the exact same complaint.

I just reinstalled Windows xp and now Adobe Reader 6 starts up much faster. Seems like the old AR installation was at least partially at fault. Make sure you uninstall any previous versions before you put on AR 6.

However, it still eats up quite a bit of RAM. After browsing 3 of today's OC Register Fry's ads the memory usage went up to 45 MB for AR alone.

Reinstalling XP seems like a lotta trouble just to view PDFs a little faster...

LOL, of course I didn't reinstall xp just for this. My system got really bloated and framerates in BF1942 was low. I "only" have 512MB of RAM but I had all sort of things running. So I decided to start over again and this time I hope I'll be able keep the system clean. Disabling the Themes Service is the first step...

Then again, I was only telling you to make sure your system is free from any other Acrobat Reader installationsm, which actually has been said somewhere in this thread.

<---- raises hand, too

On a PIII 1.0-M laptop running W2K Pro it takes several seconds to load.

Now this is the PDF's were meant to be seen! Faster load times and I can actually zoom in and out with out waiting for like a minute!!!! WOOT!!! Thanks! 😀

I dont know where you guys get that its significantly faster than AR5, the only difference that I could notice is their own ad in the upper right corner...
