E8400 & e7200 are faster than e2180 in Farcry2:

L2 cache compared:

OC'd e2180 compared to other cpus:

3.2ghz E2180 equals a 2.65ghz E7200, and probably a 2.4ghz E8400 (well below stock speeds)

With the 9800 GTX its 35 with the same settings.

My card looks different than the other Evga cards it;s the same model number as this card

But it looks like this Zogis card without the the z on the fan, it says Evga on the center of the fan.

The 2180 is definitely hurting you. Luckily, prices are crazy cheap right now. I've seen Q6600s for $130 or less on our very forums. You'd probably do well with an E8400 or so. 6MB L2 FTW.

I didn't realize that L2 cache had that large of an impact!! I believe the E2180 is the same as a C2D except it has 1 mb of L2 and is missing some kind of instruction.

I am playing @ 1440X900 which i believe is a a more CPU taxing than GPU. Man sucks, at least i was able to make a trade.... but it seems that the 3870 was just right for my system.

Greenhell6, I have an idea.

Our rigs are really similar, we both have a 9800GTX, I have 4 gigs of memory and you have 6 gigs and right now my E7200 is stock at 2.5 and you are running at 3.2.

I am also *right now* on a 19 inch widescreen and my resolution is 1440x900.

Lets you and I both run the Far Cry 2 benchmark tool. And compare our settings ? To see exactly what type of impact the cache on these cpu's has.

You want to ?

The 8800GT is about 15% faster average than the HD 3870 thanks to drivers improvements on the ATi card, so if the 9800GTX is about 10% faster at stock speed, you should have a performance improvement between 25% and up to 30% in the best case scenario. Far Cry 2 is so CPU bound, try to run other games and will see that the improvement is there. The game is shader intensive, but is more CPU oriented than anything else before.

Your chip is powerful enough for games by today''s standards, but the E8XXX series is a different beast with it's massive 6MB L2 cache while your chip has only 1MB cache, that's the only difference between the Core 2 Duo E6XXX series and your CPU, everything else is identical including instructions. You may want to overclock your CPU a little, or perhaps get a cheap Core 2 Duo CPU like the E7XXX series or the E8XXX series which are under $200 (Except the E8600), or a Q6600 for futureproof.

In Far Cry 2 I raised the eye candy up to Ultra High and I lost about 2 to 8fps with 8x Anti Alasing (Before was 4x with a combination of Very High/Ultra High), so even I'm a bit CPU bound in this weird but fun game.

Hey JPB let's try it out.. 1440X900 with everything set to max quality with no AA DX10. Loop 3 Times avg of all 3 runs. NO OC on video card.

I did try out Crysis with the new card, and i was wrong about it not being faster. Now i can play @ very high settings with 8X AA and it plays great. Call of duty 4 plays like butter.

Anyway, i will post my FPS when i get a chance.

Ok, its a deal. However, I run Win XP Pro so I wont be able to run DX10 :( Although I have seen it run in DX10 and I dont think the graphics is much different.

My GPU right now is stock as well as is my cpu. Are you referring to Ultra Quality or High Quality ? Not that it matters, just wondering because I think max would be Ultra. And I agree, No AA

My CPU is stock at 2.53
My GPU is stock at 675 Core / 1688 Shader / 2200 Memory

I would like you to duplicate these runs with your CPU at 3.2.

Sounds good. I dont have a program to take a snap shot. I will just list the framerates for each quality level. I am not going to lie about my FPS, I really want to see the difference. I am going to start with the tests now.

I just took the screenshots from holding the left Ctrl and then pressing Print Screen, then pasting them in Microsoft Paint.

Make sure you adjust accordingly to match all the settings I used in the pictures.

You are also running almost 700MHz faster than I am. So it absolutely has to be the cache of the cpu.

EDIT: Once I get my aftermarket cooler, I will clock this CPU up to 3.2 and list the difference from now to then as well.

wow!!! there is quite a difference. I am not that far off in ultra quality--which is where i play at. Cache is great thing, well i learned something new today. Thanks for taking the time to do all of this. I am going over my friends tommorow-- He has a E7200 Clocked @ 3.6 GHz, 4 GB ram, P35 Mobo and an ASUS 9800 GT Ultimate which is right on Par with an 9800 GTX. I am going to get him to do the ultra quality benchmark @ 1280 x 1024, I will re-run my benchmark to see how close i am to his. Hope I get some gift cards for Xmas to TIGER so i can get a Q6600.
