I love some of the graphics, but I hate how even when I lower settings all the way and attempt to lock the engine at 60fps, it still feels weird and oddly stuttery at times, like the engine isn't streaming stuff in fast enough. And the pop-in and reshuffling around of foilage models as you walk around destroys any immersion that the fancy graphics attempt to create.

Two very very good points. For me the engine seemed to sometimes stutter when I was close to objects, like barrels or a wall. Even when rivatuner reported a solid 85 fps.

And the foilage model switching is some of the worst I have ever seen in a game. I think this could be somewhat remedied by setting Geometry to Ultra though, if I remember correctly. But that would of course affect the framerate.

Oh well, despite all the issues I still had lots of fun with the game.

FYI, the engine is the Dunia Engine, which is a forked variation of CryEngine 1.5.

Indeed, it is an old engine being pushed to the limit with bolted-on tech, and feels that way. For some reason Blood Dragon as a whole ran much smoother for me. The framerate is the same as reported by RadeonPro but there is less stuttering and also less intrusive LOD pop-in. One thing to note is that in Blood Dragon there is no global illumination as far as I can tell, as it would be unnecessary without the dynamic day/night cycle that is in Far Cry 3. Might be one reason why the engine feels smoother.

Took me a lot longer than that, but that's because I spent about 30 hours tentatively hunting sharks and figuring out how to skin them without another shark coming along and eating me. There's nothing more terrifying than a video game shark. Even the weak-ass sharks in FC3, which did essentially no damage and could be killed via quicktime event... NOPE. Not having any of that thank you very much; I'll stick to the far-deadlier-but-way-less-terrifying jaguars and panthers.

Here kitty, kitty....

Yeah, I was completely wrong in my time estimation (sorry PrincessFrosty!). I put a lot more than 20 hours in the game as well according to my Steam log. I don't remember grinding a whole lot but maybe I just don't recall that part of the game as much as the outposts and other side missions.

So excited for this game!! FC3 was the first game I played all the way through in a long time. Not really sure if I like the idea of the grappling hook, but wont knock it till I try it.

Loved the online play and can't wait to see what they add on for FC4

I've enjoyed every FarCry.

I think FarCry2, or at least their approach to that game, was my favorite. It certainly had its annoyances (weapons wearing out after 5 minutes and endless respawning), but it's still one of my favorite FPS titles in life.

I'm really looking forward to this. Far Cry 3 was the only game I've finished in forever. I can't remember which one before that. This gets me in the mood to buy new video cards and a monitor.

Far Cry 2 was the only one I didn't like, as it seemed to go out of its way to be annoying. I'm looking forward to taking down outposts with just a bow and throwing knives.

Be honest its Far Cry 3.1 with a new skin and some new animals. Looking online the length is at least 35hrs which is decent. I remember Far Cry 3 cracked close to 30hrs.

My computer recently croaked. I bought a new economy mobo and proc while I make grander plans for an upgrade. I installed a few games I was intimately familiar with, or at least played recently, to judge the performance of my new hardware.

Well, like Lays potato chips, you can't liberate just one tower. I had been chomping at the bit to play Wasteland 2 and was just laid up a for a few days after some oral surgery. I was reserving this time for WL2. In the last 3 days, I've now liberated the northern island, and will be working on the bottom, probably tonight.

Poor Wasteland. I've loved the few hours I've put into it, but Far Cry 3 is the comfortable shoe that I love to slip on.

Nothing is done perfectly, but as a whole, it's just one of the most FUN games out there. I've never ONCE thought about going hang gliding, until I played FC3. I love that glider!

I reserved a day off just to play FC4 on release day. And I don't have much time for games any more.

I really wish they'd 'remaster' FC2 with the tech/gameplay of FC3/4

I was almost really happy with FC2.... Updated graphics/gameplay would really bring that game back to life.

I'm ok with the game coming out as revisions.

I like the platform/gameplay.

They could make another FC3 in a different setting and I'd play the shit out of it.

FC4 just seems like FC3 evolved a bit and changed setting. I'm ok with that.

I agree totally. I have no problem with developers building a platform and carrying over mechanics and assets. There is no reason to spend all that time and money developing them only to throw them away for the next game, especially if those mechanics are really sound.

And I for one would also love for FC2 to be redone....well, maybe not redone, but revisited with the new tech. I still think that environment and the varied characters were the most interesting of any of the FarCry games to date.

Yeah, I had no problem with the setting, but malaria and always degrading weapons were annoying. And the game appeared open, but it map design funneled you into respawning road blocks every 100 meters or so.

It would be kinda cool though with the new mechanics to go through the African plains and come across a pride of lions or pack of hyenas. I'm actually not fond of the hunting in FC3+, but I think it would be cool to see the wildlife in action.

Agreed - as long as they'd also nuke the checkpoints that respawn as soon as you turn your back. I did NOT like that part. Well, I enjoyed taking them down over and over again, but not literally fifteen seconds later after I realize I've taken the wrong road.

I'll get this at launch but I hate their platform so much, I would probably go for a $69.99 "no uplay" edition.

So I bit the bullet and preordered for $48 at Green Man Gaming. It doesn't look like there will be a better deal until the Nvidia codes start showing up on eBay. To get the price, log into your GMG account and go to the VIP section. As long as you have an account you can get the VIP price, and if you don't have an account simply create one.
