Got to try a good chunk at my buddy's house. Enough to get through the opening escape and then explore without having an active mission. Now I REALLY want it. Much better than my first impressions of FC2.

The one thing I don't like though is the roaming caravans of bad guys. I got the attention of a few trucks while shooting goats and it got hairy quick. It's similar BS to what I didn't like in FC2... I can't seem to go anywhere easily without running into enemies even if that's not what I'm trying to do. There's some stuff that improves this issue as there's fast travel points (though I only have one so not sure how spread out they are) and there's the capture points but these guys are like roaming around unchecked.

You have to take over the nearby bases to get rid of the patrols. I love this part about the game.

and the animations? um last time I checked a human has to make movements to do things..
things don't just poof into my pockets.. when I look at them.
the animations are there to draw you in as a real character.

Its distracting when you hit E, and you sit there for 5 seconds looking at your hands. In real life you dont think about what you want to do, then watch yourself do it.

Drink coffee.
Watch self's arm drinking mechanics for 5 sec.

You do it in the background. When looting, its not like you actually find something in a jean pocket one time, shirt pocket the next. Or you dont have the item in your hand. You just watch 5 sec of animations and the items magically appear in your rucksack. So whats the point of the animation!

Gotcha

I had cleared out one in the area already so thought I would have been good, but I guess I need to get the other ones too.

I cleared out my 1st base, and as I was driving off a minute later I accidently ran over one of the allies that had occupied the base. They just seem to sort of come out of nowhere as soon as you take it over. Any ways it causes the rest of them to come at me guns blazing.

I ended up quitting out of the game after that, does anyone know how actions like this effect you? I was wondering if I was suppose to now kill all the allies and if it would change how other "good guys" treated me later in the game.

cheapest place for this game right now?

Seems like gamefly with code 1GFT1112 (20% off) is the cheapest place that will allow to actually buy it.

Spent awhile trying to ram a shark with a jeep (jump jeep off steep hill or incline, collide with shark in the water)... no luck yet.

Hansel and Gretel'ed pirates into a trap of komodo dragons with rocks.

Keep dieing trying to drop out of a glider onto the top of a pirates head (for the skill that kills them from above).

No luck fighting cheetahs with the knife.

Too busy screwing around to do any story missions atm... sign of a great game.

The game seems pretty good at isolating events.

For instance, later in the game you have to dress up in a merc outfit, and they won't attack you because they think you're one of them. But if you do attack them, they'll start shouting that you are a traiter and call for help. BUT if nobody else is around and you take them out, your secret doesn't get told.

So you have moments where you feel like you need to run someone down before they hop in a car and drive to a nearby base or get to an alarm.

You just really need to remain attentive of your surroundings.

Next time it might not be a neutral NPC you accidently run down.. You could be running away from something and hide in a bush, and realize you just sat down with a tiger.

I'm having way to much fun with fire. Use explosive arrows and try and start a ring of fire around a camp of enemies :D

Haven't been totally successful in that yet, but the last time I tried before calling it a night I had them circled all but for 2 spots where they could get away from the circle. So they start heading to the side that is open closes to them, well what do you know, they start running into the forest and 2 leopards started attacking them. 2 of them died the others were shooting their guns and another dude started running away but the fire had finally closed the other whole. It was glorious and way better then I could have hoped for or even thought of happening :D

One of the best games I've ever played... even my friends who didn't care for previous far cry series games are loving this and saying it's one of the best they've played inna great long time. Farcry 3 is pretty much takes it home and draws you in.

Awesome to the core.

run's flawless on my new i7 3770k system (oc'd to 4.5ghz) and 32GB Corsair Venegance 1600mhz RAM, WIn 8 Pro on a Sammy 830 SDD, couple of 64MB cache 1 terabyte western digital for games and apps, HP zr30w 2560x1600 30' monitor via displayport, and SLI'd Standard EVGA GTX680's. looks gorgeous. Just hope they fix some of the vegetation draw distance issues and MSAA options since the ingame AA is busted. Vsync can be a little tricky in game as well... option 1 for 60fps lock, option 2 for 30 fps lock, so i disable it and just enabled the nvidia control panel option to adaptive. Also hope they add smaller HUD options, but there's hacks out there for it already.

Apparently it uses FXAA if you disable MSAA and turn off the "alpha to coverage" for supersampling (btw, alpha to coverage does nothing unless MSAA is on) and set the post process FX to ultra.

If you got the $$$, definetely pickup this beast. worth every red cent. 25 hours of gameplay if you just follow the main story.... easily 60 to 80 if you do all mission, crafting, hunting, etc..

I watched my buddy play last night, and it was his first spin at it.

He had just gotten out of the tutorial parts and was finally free to roam around. He came up on a patrol and took them out. He was sitting there looting when out of nowhere another jeep comes flying up. They almost ran him over and as they hit him, he reacted by holding down the fire trigger. Since he was facing the jeep, he pretty much just unloaded into the windshield until he had to reload. After that first clip, he realizes nobody is moving and he had killed the 2 guys before they even got out.

Unloading a clip into the windshield, watching it shatter and blood go everywhere and hearing the guys get shot up was very...... immersive.

I told my rich ass uncle, who actually has a house on a small island (british virgin islands) that for the price he pays to fly down there, I could give him a 'vacation' he never forgets. He doesn't game, but for the $5,000 it costs for him to go there (flights, boats, etc) I could build a damn nice gaming rig, get a 60" tv, some chairs, etc and take him through the game. He's a hunter with a beach house, so I know the game experience would hit home.

Well, yeah; on a rig like that, it better damn well run flawless.

You guys enjoy the FOV? Anyway to edit it? It seems like every object moves so sudden when turning and it makes my eyes bug out a little.

I never really understood which is better, high or low FOV? My impression was high was better because it gave you more information on the screen in terms of viewing space, but now I'm learning a lower FOV helps your accuracy.

if you go to advanced video options, there's an FOV slider. :p

Generally speaking, high FOV is good. A higher field of view lets you see more of your environment and gives you a heightened sense of awareness.

Of course though, there is such thing as the FOV being too high; a ridiculously high FOV (well over 100 degrees) will distort your view and create a fish-eye effect on your monitor.

You're correct that, in theory, a lower FOV will help your accuracy. The reason why this works is because the lower the FOV, the narrower and more zoomed-in your vision will be, magnifying far-off enemies so you can pick them off at a distance. However, this comes with the disadvantage of sacrificing peripheral view. Where lower FOV allows better view of enemies directly in front of you, it gives you a worse view of enemies around you. Does that make sense?

It's all about finding the right balance. IMO, 90 degrees is the sweet spot for FOV. Perfect balance of peripheral vision, while still comfortably spotting objects and enemies at a distance. (Some people prefer over 100 degrees, but I think that's too much). 90 is good. That's what I have Far Cry 3 set to right now.

If you have a few minutes, this video explains the concept pretty well: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=blZUao2jTGA

I would also add that increasing your FOV will adversely impact the render cost on your system. More on the screen = more to render.

This is why many games lower the FOV so that the games will run smoother.

No matter what I do, game crashes at the splash screen. The far cry 3 folder within the my games folder is empty? Steam forum suggestions aren't helping and Ubisoft support is silent, submitted dxdiag few error reports and screenshots. Tried reinstalling, no dice. After spending $60 on the game, spent another $40 for win8, same exact problem under win8 too. Every other game and app work fine. I'm truly clueless what to do...

You have to take over the nearby bases to get rid of the patrols. I love this part about the game.

I don't really like how it's all or nothing though. If you don't take out the base, you've got trucks passing by every 30 seconds with mounted machine guns that will destroy your car if you try to just drive away, since they're basically impossible to lose on the roads. If you do take out the base, there's no enemies anywhere and the only gun fights you get into are in missions.

Sometimes I will leave the bases alone for a while, just to keep things interesting, but every time I run into an enemy truck I end up having to kill like 30 guys.

If a vehicle is coming, all you have to do is crouch behind some minor (small rock/leaves) cover, slightly off the road, and they will drive right past you. Crouching behind vehicles also works, unless they block the road which makes new patrols stop.

You can even sprint into the woods away from the roads when the detection meter is half full, and you will 'outrun' them being able to spot you.

I honestly feel it's much too easy to not be detected. Getting away in a car chase seems to be pretty easy also... not sure what you mean by not being able to lose them. They will follow you pretty much forever, but once they lose detection, they move slowly but continually in your last direction.
