Far Cry 3: Anyone else excited?

After FC2 AKA African respawn in 60 seconds or less central im going to need alot more than few good(and probably paid for) reviews before i fall into this trap again.

I even bought FC2 on PS3 and PC before i found out just how bad it really was.

This will be a sub $5 on steam sale purchase for me.

That is a pretty dumb statement. If you shop at Publix around the corner in store #232 than you will have a opinion about store #133 when you visit another town. That is why they carry the Far Cry name. So the user is expected to have some association.

While certain things are different I assume the same publisher and same developer until I read otherwise. UBI was for years on my do not buy list because of their silly DRM. Now they have to win me back because I associate certain things with the way they think of me as a paying customer. That is probably the main reason why they won't get my sale day one but at a sale down the road.
 
I really liked Far Cry 2 despite all its flaws. I only played for 7 or 8 hours and didn't get out of the first area, but those 7 or 8 hours were really fun - just got sick of driving across the map for every mission and running into 20 checkpoints on the way.


So, I'm looking forward to FC3. They probably won't make the same mistakes, and so far everything I've seen looks really promising.

That is a good point. You should wait a couple weeks after it is released to make a purchase decision, so you can judge the game on its own merits.
For those considering a day 1 purchase, judging the game on its own merits isn't possible, so they are gambling that it will be similar to the previous game.

You said it was fun, but then gave an example of why you quit in the first area because of how un-fun it was getting.

There are lots of games that have less than stellar parts, but a GOOD game makes you want to get through them so you can get to the rest. A bad game does things so wrong that you can't even ignore the bad stuff long enough to get back to having fun. Obviously this is my personal measure of good vs. bad, but it seems to me that if you stopped the game because it started to get annoying then how could you consider it so highly in your head?
 
I'd rather walk to something once and have a waypoint system, then drive to it each time and have to deal with respawning enemies.

I guess thats why I prefer Fallout.
 
Even though I got Far Cry 2 for free it left a bad taste in my mouth. They will need to put 3 on uber sale to get me interested.

I don't agree with your analogy (a chain store is going to try to maintain consistency across branches, while video games are in no way obligated or even expected to do so across sequels), but I do understand why people would formulate an opinion this way. I'm just saying it's unfortunate that they do.

That's way too soon. Keep in mind FC3 and the Steam holiday sale will be released/occuring in the same month. If we're lucky, we'll see a 25% off sale on it or something. I suspect we won't see a full half-off for a while.

I haven't looked, but if FC3 is coming with video cards, you might be able to snag a cheap version on eBay from people who don't care about the game. I remember Arkham City going for crazy cheap last year before it released (like in the $20 range) because of this.

Definitely. If you go to the For Sale/Trade forum here on AT, you may find some of our very own forum members selling their copies for cheap.

I personally got it for free with my 7870, so I'm good to go. 😀
 
I decided to buy a AMD Never Settle code on ebay for $31. I figure its cheaper than any of the current deals, and probably about what it would be a little better than the upcoming steam sales. I dont foresee this being a great multiplayer title, so not getting any preorder bonuses wont bother me.

Of course with Ubisoft titles, it will be cheaper few months after release, but $31 is cheap enough that I wont feel ripped off, even if I end up not liking it. I just hope there is no AMD specific crap in there that cripples the game on Nvidia.

FYI, I got a code yesterday off the FS/FT forum for $25. Same as Childs - it doesn't work with Steam, only Uplay, but I'm happy.

I'm not sure how to put it. Those first 8 hours were just really good. The game was immersive. Atmospheric. Like a crappy African STALKER. The fire mechanics were cool. The map mechanic was cool. The shooting felt satisfying. The world was open, pretty, and felt alive, initially at least. Shooting an explosive crossbow at a caravan I'm ambushing was fun. I just love open world games.

It was fun for 8 hours, then I got a mission to drive to the other end of the world and I quit. I wouldn't call it GOTY, but I don't hate it. I think I paid $2.50 for it, so that might be influencing me a bit.

I could say the same for Skyrim, really. It was fun initially, the world is pretty, immersive, and exploring is fun. Then you realized the combat is dull, every dungeon looks the same, the world is lifeless. I played Skyrim for about 20 hours before getting sick of it, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I certainly wouldn't call Skyrim a bad game, I just got bored of it.
 
Does this game have DRM? Ubisoft does not have a good track record with supporting their DRM in newer versions of windows. I'll like to avoid getting burned.

Just Uplay, they moved away from the always on drm. Uplay is their version of Origin for their games.

Can you log into Uplay and download your games at any time like you can with Steam or Origin, or is it simply just DRM? I think I tried to download a game from it at one time, but couldn't figure out how.

I don't know. My experience with it has been minimal and has been different for the two games I remember dealing with it. In Anno 2070 I log into it from the game, in Assassins Creed 2 it launches Uplay and I have to launch AC2 again from there.
