By you continuing to recommend AVG it's obvious that you fall into the same crowd of the uninformed and uneducated since you run both AVG and Avast! on your own computer(s). As I've stated before you become hostile when anyone questions your motives, and it's obvious that trying to reason with you is going to be a futile attempt.

1. why are you making a new thread if there is already one existing?
2. you posted a link after a whole page of AOL praises
3. where did I specifically recommand AVG? I spoke of AVG by saying its pretty good based on personal experience, that is ALL I said. I also recommanded avast as well as AOL. At least I didn't make a whole new thread about it as you did.
4. As I have stated, many times, I don't doubt AOL is the best free antivirus software out there. but there ARE alternatives.
5. hostile? you are the one who started this ..

When a virus is detected by both software, both will pop up messages to either repair, delete, quarentine... There is no conflict...

Reboot to safe mode w/ networking if possible, disable any firewall software, then try to activate it.

John: he tried that, still no go,I think its a problem their end,he's going to give it a few days and see if it gets fixed at their end.

FYI he did try another key too, still no go.

John, thanks for this.

I haven't read all of the posts but I did install it on one computer (I have 3).

One question. I read that I had to agree to accept advertising from AOL and some of their pals but I saw no mention of this when I signed up for it.

Any truth to this?

John as you know via pm my brother got it working, however for anybody that does have activation problems he had to completely uninstall his firewall ashampoo, since that had a compatibility problem with AOL/AV on his laptop and would not let him activate AOL/AV no matter what he allowed on access settings rights between ashampoo firewall and AOL/AV,even in safe mode was a no go.

He is now using Comodo firewall and that is working happy with his AOL/AV.

Mem, thanks for posting an update. :) Another possibility as why AOL AVS refuses to allow the Next button to light up after you paste the keycode: the Windows registered owner field is blank.

Finicky little ah heck, ain't it?

The AVS's webpage is down, could they be putting up the Vista update?

Anywho, no reason for this great thread to be at the bottom when so many people are asking "What is the best antivirus"

BUMP!

John=========do you know is the registered owner field being blank will ALWAYS cause
AOL active virus shield to fail to activate----after trying damn near everything else- you may have stumbled on why it won't install for me.

And are there registry issues after a uninstall? ---I found AVS seems to at least remember the key code after uninstall.

That indeed was it---no entry in the windows registered owner page--after correcting that---active virus shield activated with no problem---on my computer and my wife's.

Is Active Virus Shield designed to supplement or replace AOL's 9.0 Security Edition?

I have an elderly friend who uses AOL 9.0 SE. He has no standalone antivirus. Is AVS designed work in conjunction with his AOL software?

AOL 9.0 SE does not include an antivirus. However AOL does try to promote the Safety & Security Center using McAfee technology, and it's a huge drain on resources; avoid it at all costs. AOL AVS does not need AOL installed to function, however it coexists with AOL without a hitch.

During the installation, after you paste or type in the product key, the Next button refuses to light up and you cannot continue setup. The problem is that the Windows registered owner field is blank. In order to rectify the issue please do the following:

Start-> Run-> regedit

Navigate to the following key: HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Current Version

Once you have reached the Current Version key take a look in the Right Hand Pane and look for 'Registered Owner'-> right click, modify, then type in a name-> ok-> Exit the registry

Now try to install or activate AOL AVS again.

To Panny,

Just to confirm that you have some problem other than the registered owner page---just open the control panel--double click system--and let system open.

There will be a screen showing who the windows copy is registered to---it can show your name, some other name, the name of Rumplestiltskin, but if it displays just the default of "owner", you didn't apply the regedit fix correctly. Lets make 100% sure before we move on.

I had the same error happen a few times today; try a different activation key.
