I tried to install this on my vista 32 bit install. It failed 3 times. I could not get it to work.

Where exactly did it fail? Others have reported success on Vista, so who knows what the source of your problem is.

**WARNING**

I tried installing AVS on my Vista 32 bit installation. After installing and rebooting, my system would not be able to boot back into windows. Safemode also was not able to delete the aol data, the pc would lock up when you tried. I had to tell windows to boot from last previous working configuration for it to work. I don't know if this is a freak occurrence or what, but I am just warning you guys, be careful.

Edit: As of right now, neither my dvd burner or my virtual cd drive are working. In device manager, they both have a yellow triangle with a black exclamation mark next their names. It says Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39). I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling and all that to no avail. Damn aol.

Help with getting Vista to be able to install drivers for my disc drives would be greatly appreciated. I tried to manually install it by selecting a driver from a list and it only has a generic cd rom driver and a mitsumi cd rom drive driver. Where are all the others? How can I get them to come back?

Edit 2: I <3 MICROSOFT! :D This fixed the problem:

my installation of AVS also caused Vista 32-bit to not start up. I had to use a System Restore point to get back the point previous to the installation.

I downloaded the avs.msi file about 20 minutes ago.

This is troubling.......

I am for some reason unable to reinstall my copy of Windows Live One Care. Nor can I manually enable Windows Firewall. This current AOL AVS file really messed up some things apparently. I am now wishing I had system restore turned on...

You (maybe the others too) are downloading and installing the wrong one! My OP clearly states:

Now you can use this direct download link to get the new 6.0.2.614 that supports Vista and addresses some security vulnerabilities in the old version.

Therefore the latest version, 6.0.2.614 which is also Vista compatible, is named AVS_v25.exe and not avs.msi :)

I guess by installing the wrong one you really hosed your system. I apologize if my initial instructions weren't clear, and I edited my OP to help prevent this from happening to others. :(

I managed to get AVS working, so I am happy about that. However, my windows firewall will not work for some reason. If I click on the icon in control panel, it tells me the Windows Firewall is running. If I then click "turn on or off windows firewall" it tells me that the Windows Firewall service is not running and asks me if I would like to start it. I click yes. It then comes up with an error message that says "Cannot Start the Windows Firewall Service."

Any ideas?

I have been doing some research and found that the Windows Firewall Service requires the Base Filtering Engine service to be running for the firewall to work. This Base Filtering Engine service is not running and also has an error if I try and start it. My thoughts are that if I can get the Base Filtering Engine service to start, then everything will be fine. Does anyone know of any way to fix the Base Filtering Engine? The exact error message I get when I manually try to start the service is "Windows could not start the Base Filtering service on local computer. Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified."

Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

ditto :|

Now going thru what dguy6789 went thru. In safe mode right now trying to restore to some restore point. :(

Just to further document the behavior, it went something like this:

1. Download and run avs.msi
2. Midway thru installation you get a popup saying there's a known issue with a driver and it's being blocked.
3. I cancel the install.
4. Things seem normal except for continuing to get the message about the known issue with the driver.
5. I figure, let's reboot, right?
6. After reboot, keeps blue-screening at login screen.
7. Reboot into safe mode.
8. Start - type in "System Restore" and hit Enter and wait 2-3 minutes.
9. System restore pops up and recommends you restore to pre-AVS installation.
10. You sit for a while while the screen says "Please wait while your Windows files and settings are being restored" (only took a couple minutes).
11. Windows reboots into normal mode.
12. Windows does NOT crash at the login screen!
13. Tells me the System Restore has been completed successfully.
14. Things feel fine throughout my system so I go for the proper installer.
15. Installer crashes and Vista tells me it's due to DEP. yay!
16. Well, after something like that, what can you do? So I just run the installer again and this time it appears to work! Very strange!
17. AVS seems to be running fine and I've not noticed any permanent side-effects of this mishap.

Unless you hear more from me, assume all is happy now! Thanks for the info on AVS for Vista! :D

After that, I think I'd change your Topic Summary to say something like: "Vista Support via special download link". I didn't even read the thread before going and trying to install it and that's where I screwed up.

I can't get it to update the definitions. It screams and bitches that the definitions are out of date (which they are, 04-02-2007) but then when I try to update it completes and says "Threat signatures are up-to-date" in the update window.

Reboot, and it's back to step 1.

To force the Kaspersky download servers instead of AOL's add this to your hosts file:

127.0.0.1 download.newaol.com

I just installed AVS and working great.

What is a good firewall to use alongside AOL AVS? I currently have the Windows firewall enabled and I doubt that it is sufficient. I am behind a router.

What OS? If it's Vista, the Advanced Windows Firewall is more than enough to suit you. If it's XP, take a look at Comodo Personal Firewall... it's good and it's free.
