Barf. D:

What's more is since the patties are just oversized nuggets, we can only assume they're produced in the same manner.

My guess is not since it is much more efficient to remove the meat from the bone when it comes to a cow. With poultry, it is probably rather labor intensive for them to remove a decent amount of meat from the bones. So it makes sense for them to use a mechanical separater. I would imagine through that they do probably use a very fine grind for the beef to have a uniform texture and composition but I doubt they have to go all the way to beef paste.

No way of telling if this is true, but someone posted this in the Gizmodo comments:

I sell over 100,000lbs of this monthly to companies all over the country. It’s not gonna kill you but let me clear up some confusion.

You would never find yourself eating a chicken nugget or a patty made from MSC. They are mostly made for lost cost feeding programs such as prisons.

The people below saying that its made from ground up chickens are incorrect. After the chicken is deboned and you have removed the breasts, drums, wings and so on you are left with the chicken carcass, which is just a bunch of bone with tiny pieces of meat attached. That is thrown into a special machine that grinds it up and separates the meat from the bone fragments. There are no eyes, skin, organs, claws, beaks or anything of that nature.

AND Mcdonalds uses all white breast meat in their chicken nuggets. So does every other fast food restaurant chain.

MSC is mostly used in hot dogs. Unless it says All beef or all pork then its made with chicken MSC. If it says meat then it can be a mixture of beef/pork/MSC.

It’s just a way for manufacturers to cut down on waste and provide a cheaper product for us.

Oh yeah, well then definitely I'm sure. Oh! Don't forget the McRib. I have a feeling that the Simpson's image of pouring a glowing liquid into a mold to form the patty isn't too far off...

They sure are tasty though. The McRib is one of the best things McDonalds has ever made.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meat_slurry

Actually, the mechanically separated meat gets ground up into meat slurry.

Since the majority of meat in this country gets processed in the same few places (watch food inc) there is a higher problem when it comes to bacteria do to concentration. So everything does get bathed in ammonia to remove as much bacteria during processing as possible. The problem is, when 1 piece of the meat gets the bacteria, it gets spread to everything else. So they just clean it all now. This is because that meat slurry you saw in the picture in the OP probably has little parts from tens of thousands of chickens in that bit of goop.

So the OP is pretty much spot on about how McNuggets are made. Same thing with fish and such. Every part of the animal is used as much as possible so to not have anything wasted.

Here's a little tip. Look at the history of "hot wings" and how they came about. Orignally no one ate that part of the bird so it was mostly thrown out. Some little shop decided to do something different that none of the competitors were doing and found they could get wings and legs really cheap. They baked them in a sauce originally and served them up as really cheap appetizers. Everyone loved them and it took off! The thing is, originally no one would touch that part of the bird for whatever reason here in the states.

Also, as required by law, no one piece of food can be 100% MSM (mechanically separated meat). Hotdogs can only be 20%. Then again I typically eat the kosher beef dogs lately. No MSM in those.

Why is this surprising? They're completely uniform products in terms of texture, visual aesthetics, size, etc. It would have to be made out of some kind of extruded meat paste.

ever wonder how eggs on salads at fast food joints all look the same?

It actually looks pretty yummy, if you take away the fact it is supposed to be chicken. Looks like pink taffy or soft-serve strawberry ice cream. :awe:

I'd think most processes in the fast food industry would be gross to watch in action. Luckily, we don't get to see it. Just eat it!

Ugh, I thought that was a picture of frozen yogurt when I first saw it. I guess its not surprising, but I still would rather not see what I'm actually eating.
