Which led me to buy a ps3... and now 3-4 years later its being released on 360 as well. Square used to be a wonderfully good company back in the SNES days, but I have little respect for them at this point. I'll buy FF13, as an FF fan I pretty much have to, but I still say fvck this company.

First point: You do realize that the first Final Fantasy game released by Square-Enix was Final Fantasy X, right? They were Square/Squaresoft up until that point.

Second point: Square-Enix is getting your money regardless of your faux anger at them and how much they "suck". So what do they care what you think? You buy their stuff based on a name alone anyway. They've already got you hooked.

You don't HAVE to buy a bad game just because it has a certain name to it. I've been a huge fan of Final Fantasy since playing the original on my NES back in the day, but I haven't bought Final Fantasy XII, and I only played Final Fantasy XI Online for about two hours.

In regards to the OP, one would think that you would be certain to get Square-Enix's permission before undertaking this task and investing tons of time and effort into this project. Regardless of whether Square-Enix took their sweet time responding or not, I would certainly not waste a large amount of time on a project that could be shut down in the future because of possible copyright infringement.

Poor planning on the part of the remake/sequel team. Get definitive permission in your hands, in writing, before investing the time and effort into such a project. Sorry, as cool as the project might be, it's hard to feel sorry for them when they plunged ahead making a project that they had a reasonable feeling could be shut down at any time.

All of this faux outrage at Square-Enix is amusing. YOU try and invest countless man hours and dollars into developing an IP, and then see how you feel when people try and take your work (without your permission and/or paying for the right to use it) and do whatever they want with it.

I made a map for Team Fortress Classic that used only textures and sprites made by Valve. They didn't seem to mind. I even posted about it on the Steam forum and I gave download links and everything. I was freely giving away stuff that was clearly valve's IP, and they didn't ask me to stop.

One guy went so far as to make an entire game of copied IP called I Wanna Be That Guy. The intro to IWBTG is virtually the same as Megaman 2. Do you think the maker of that game has been sued by any of the companies he ripped off? As far as I can tell, no he hasn't.

Apples to oranges. You're talking about making a map for a game that provides a map editor, as opposed to creating a new game based on another company's IP and using most/all of that company's original assets to create said game.

You didn't create "Team Fortress Classic 2 Remixed Turbo Edition!" You created a map for that game. Big difference.

Don't copyright laws state they have to be making some sort of money off the release to be sued? I mean, I'd release it anyway. I don't care about law suits!

Why don't you do some reading on derivative works and fair use and get back to us on that.

Maybe I haven't, but lots of people have.

Sven Coop, multiplayer version of the original Half-Life
Half-Life Underground, a 17 map expansion pack that uses the original HL guns and monsters
Half-Life Times of Troubles, quote "It is nearly the same story as in Half-Life, but with a few differences."
HL Opposing Forces Coop, coop version of Half-Life Opposing Forces.

It's the exact same thing. Making an expansion pack to Half-Life or Quake is perfectly ok. Making an expansion pack to Chrono Trigger is not ok. Squaresoft is a bunch of cunts.

Let's look at some other games that have freely distributed expansion packs made by the fans.
Red Alert 2 has 45 mods.
Gears of War mods
Battlefield 2 has over 100 mods.

Just because Valve has not decided to enforce strict copyright on Half-Life IP doesn't mean it's a precedent that Square has to follow. It doesn't make Square assholes; it just makes Valve cool.

Never seen CAPCOM go after the hundreds of classic MegaMan ROM hacks. Fuck SE... I didn't even know this existed and I'm pissed that I won't get to experience it now.
