So they basically waited all those years for him to be almost finished with his project and then they decided to send that latter to him? Well obviously from their stupid laws and annoying copyrights and subjective intellectual properties' point of views it doesn't matter how long he worked on that project (and the rest of his team as well), that's for sure, what a bunch of heart-less bastards.

Wow that seriously pisses me off, and I had no idea this project was under way.

How cruel. :|

What a dick move.

If anything, SE should try to partner up with the guy (team?) who made this, provided it's good enough, and release on a variety of platforms.

But nope, instead they shut out a fan after several years of hard work at the last minute. Some companies just don't get it.

He's scared to. They've basically told anyone beta testing the game doing QA that they'll be on their own against Square if someone leaks what is already out.

I wasn't aware of this project, too bad it won't be released now. This is what happens when you give a bunch of stupid lawyers the power to run your company. The release of the game would have been good publicity for Square but with this move they've lost a few fans, probably not many but what a dick move, especially the -wait until they're almost finished- part.

Square Enix truly does suck. FF7 was excellent and its been downhill ever since. The PC releases off ff games have been terrible at best, and FF13 was scheduled/planned in the first year after ps3's launch... Which led me to buy a ps3... and now 3-4 years later its being released on 360 as well. Square used to be a wonderfully good company back in the SNES days, but I have little respect for them at this point. I'll buy FF13, as an FF fan I pretty much have to, but I still say fvck this company.

They did the same thing a few years back with a 3d remake of chrono trigger that was looking rather promising.

Yup. What a bunch of douches. 5 years is alot of time to waste to just bend over like they did. :(

Sucks even more because they were not distributing the game, they were making a patch to it (not even the patcher itself). No different from a Game Genie/Game Shark IMO. IIRC Nintendo tried to take Game Genie to court before and lost. EDIT: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galoob_v._Nintendo

Anyone else get suckered into buying the ff7 pc edition from square/eidos? Was buggy as hell, worse than the ps1 version, and before long was unsupported and unplayable in windows xp without an unofficial patch. Didn't bother with ff8 for pc but I hear it was as bad.

I've been anticipating the release of this sequel to one of the most, if not the most popular RPG's ever made. What a foul and shady move by SE, it's perfectly within right, but terrible none the less.

Trailers to the near finished product.

On a PC gaming forum you dare to even speculate that CT may be "the most popular" RPG ever? With the likes of BG, PS:T, and some others out there? Kidding, kidding. It probably is. BG/PS:T managed to miss a lot of customers. And man, I loved CT. What a BS move by SE, but really, who didn't see something like that coming? "Oh, you're actually going to finish now? Screw that, what if we... years from now.. want to milk some extra cash out of the franchise?" Damnit SE.

It's not just the names, they use the same characters, the same artwork, the same interface, the same monsters, the same sounds, etc. All they really did was just write a new storyline and maybe music.

They weren't exactly walking the line on this one.

If that is the case, could it not be classed as a Modification?

If I was going to work for years on a project that infringed copyrights, trademarks and other IP, I'd ask the company for permission first not just hope that they never notice or care.

Especially knowing that other infringing fan-made games & mods like Aliens Doom had been "Foxed."

Squenix is making money off of reissues and remakes so it makes business sense for them to stop fans from diluting their brands.

Not really. Its not as if they are pumping out CT material anytime soon. If they aren't gonna do anything but sit on it, why even bother stopping fans from creating their version? It's not like the fan version will draw attention away from their nonexistant new sequel.

I bet they just lost a few fans in the process.

I see your point, but you and those few fans obviously don't see the point in copy righting material.

with the rise in popularity of the old 2d rpg's on the ds... and nintendo's constant revamping of that system... i'm not so sure that would be completely true.

wow... this shit with SE and then you have companies like Crytek who offer the Sandbox/SDK/Assetts and even a "mod" button on their game's UI.
