Folks at the high end the 'added gravity' is actually a nice thing for the folks that go to those places. They are usually going to add to that. They can then just take the total and divide it amongst the table EVENLY as adults do when they go out together.

Many will throw a buck or two extra in. It's extremely rare to get bad service in a place like this. Personally I have not seen it ever at the higher price points. What i do encounter and why I hate places like Fridays and the like is you always have people complaining about the service and the level they are getting is expected for that. Add that to the fact that most of those types are also trying to be as difficult as they can 'since the food is so expensive'.

The people complaining are talking the over crowded places where they expected 5 star service.

Service charge =|= tip.

Most placed have gotten smart and changed their wording to service charge so people don't contest it. If you call it a tip, then people are not obligated to pay it.

QFT or 'table charge'.

However, legally a restaurant could charge a mandatory tip...it simply has to be listed on the menu.

350pp (now probably 450) w/ no mandatory tip

of course, if you're eating at urasawa you're probably dropping 25%+ anyway.

No one needs to be told at that price point you are expected to tip. It's common sense among the wealthy.

Sadly, the poor think it's common sense not to tip since the server gets paid already.

We had unacceptable service at this place when we were out dining with some friends who were visiting from out of town. We all ordered at the same time but they didn't have my food or my wife's food ready when they brought out our guest's food.

It was kind of out of the ordinary, we've been here a few times and never had this kind of service even when the place is crowded... which it wasn't.

that menu has a sane note on bottom

"For your convenience, a suggested 18% gratuity is added to parties of 6 or more, payment of this gratuity is not mandatory."

I don't know if I'd label that unacceptable, I know I'd not screw the server over it depending on the answer and the solution.

We can't even spend 5+ years planning a space mission without some blowing up. Any food service will have mistakes, it's how they fix it that matters.

The plates could have been sent to the wrong table. They will not re-serve those (I am happy for that). They could have been dropped, wrong/missed instructions, a bad batch came out.

If it was regular, I'd get things comp'd and not come back after the final time.

I have had similar issues at very expensive restaurants. Almost always that item ends up removed from the final bill without even asking.

To those that tip, this is a convenience.

When we eat out we just divide the bill equally. We don't worry about who had what. If someone is drinking high end, they usually run their own tabs anyway.

Having a total, dividing it by X couples and throwing that in the pot is easy.

Non-adults try to itemize everything and then usually end up leaving out a drink or two, tax and short the tip. This almost always ends up with the total being short and everyone swearing 'they paid'.

If anyone knows servers, the larger tables end up being the worst tips and sometimes people leaving with a buck or two short that they end up eating.

This is why many lower scale restaurants just don't return with the credit slips / final bill if cash and leave it. The server waits for all payments to be made and change is needed will return. Higher end restaurants know it's rare for patrons to short-change the establishment.

I agree that it was the dumbest thing to call the cop because bad publicity is never a good thing and for what over -/+$40 ??
With that said, I think they made crap up just not to tip the 17%.
Did you all see the video and the people that didn't want to pay the grat ??
When I worked as a server for Disney many yrs, the 18% was added for party of 6 or more.
I've seen large parties made up all kind of excuses not to pay the 18%.
The easiest is of course to say the service was "bad".
I mean what other excuses can you give for not wanting to pay the 18% ??
I had a manager that was ready good at dealing with the cheap fucks.
She would always bring the servers with her to the table when they complaint about the 18%.
Now if they were to complaint about the bad service, they would have to do it in front of the server which then they have to come with with other excuses.

It no different from people booking banquets and are obligated to pay the "service fee".
I know all banquets does this.
I often travel to other countries and I see a 5%-10% service fee that I'm obligated to pay.

Its funny that I can totally relate to this.
People always swear that they put in enough money to cover the tip.
Bill comes to $250 and once all the money is in, its $270.
Oh $20 is plenty. These cheap fucks don't realize this might be only 1 of 2 large parties the server might get all night.
I can absolutely see why restaurant add a mandatory gratuity.

I only mangaged a restaurant for about two years, but I could easily tell you ten horror stories about large parties if I combed my memory.

Large parties are ass.
