Fallout New Vegas: How long until you get to Vegas?

I just started Fallout New Vegas and so far it's really fun, but I'm disappointed that I'm not in Vegas in this game. I was really looking forward to a Vegas-themed Fallout but so far I am just wandering around the Mojave desert. I have been playing for about 6 hours, just finished the quest where you have to
send ghouls off on rocket ships
and still no Vegas in sight :(

You could walk right to the entrance as soon as you leave the doctors house, if you like.
And the ghouls in space mission is one of the best, you didnt waste your time doing it.
Did you convince the one human to stay behind and seek a new life?

Yeah it was great fun, I'm not complaining :) Mostly just curious. Yeah I convinced him to stay in Novac, I'm guessing that will have some implications later in the game.

30ish hours, but even when I went the best way I took my time to level up and do some side missions. I don't like to rush through this type of game, because it misses all the variety.

I think it took me about 20. But as said before, if you can get past the deathclaws and cazadores you can go there right away. Better make sure you get the stealth boy before leaving though.

Even with Stealth Boys I failed to get past Death Claws.

From a story perspective you go:

Goodsprings
Primm
Nipton
Novac
Boulder
Vegas

That's assuming you follow every quest.

I probably played for 50 hours, maybe more before I hit the strip. I had to much fun roaming the Mojave, didn't feel the need to rush to New Vegas.

It took me probably 35 hours to get to the Strip, but I did every single quest that was available to me before I got there.

GA - I'm in the same boat, just finishing up that mission now. I've always got the impression that I could walk up to NV if I wanted to, but in trying not to feel pressured to go there, I tell myself that I should only go there once I'm a straight-up badass in power armor. You wanna shoot me in the head and leave me for dead? Well now I have a Gauss Rifle, suckas.

If you haven't done so already, INSTALL this mod. It's as simple as dragging one folder over. It removes a lot of the fucking frustration of navigating the consolized menus. http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=34913

Vegas was pretty disappointing for me. The engine is laughable when it comes to portraying large cities, therefore you get a single street divided into 3 parts.

Yeah I noticed that too. Not nearly as "awesome" as I'd been led to believe.
On the other hand, within the context of the story it totally makes sense. Compared to everything else in the wasteland New Vegas really is impressive. Nothing in Fallout 1, 2, or 3 even comes close.

The engine is the same engine as Fallout 3 and FO3 had a fairly well mapped out D.C. New Vegas scaled differently though and the strip was supposed to be just the strip and not an entire bustling metropolis. The Strip itself is also designed to be only part of the game while a large part of it is played throughout the Mojave. If they'd made the Strip size similar to how D.C. was done in FO3 then you'd have a ton of more time spent just traversing the city unnecessarily.

I put in 50+ hours before making it to Vegas. I wasn't really rushing towards it anyways, and continually got side tracked with the bajillions of quests out in the desert.

Me too. I kept seeing the glare of the Lucky hotel in the distance and always end up going in the opposite direction. Then when you get to the "burbs" of Vegas there are even more missions to partake.

MOST of the fun and game is outside of the city. You more or less get advanced quests and story line elements from it.

I think the best parts are some of the vaults that have a doom/quake'ish feel to them. I think it was Vault 34?? filled with rads and very easy to get lost in.

Yeah, I think the best parts are the "dungeons".

I really wish it weren't developed for console. Some added map/item/object/conversation complexity, etc. would be a massive improvement.

That place is a deathtrap. I miss the subway system from fallout 3 and the dungeons that led off from it.

Vault 34? Deathtrap? Yea.. especially if you don't have any recent saved games outside of the vault. If you die from RADS and your last saved game doesn't put you close enough to the exit to get out, game over.

I had a few very close calls.

That seems to be the general consensus since Oblivion. Once they got the consolitis the games were never the same. Having said that, we can still have loads of fun with what we got.

I got to Freeside last night so I'm already pretty close to The Strip. Is this one of the games that will let me play side quests after the main quest? I tend to like to blow through the main story quickly, but it sucks when it prevents you from doing other stuff when you finish.

I think I didn't get there for a good 20-30 hours my first time through. The second and third play throughs, I went straight to get the intelligence implant to 'perfect' my character.

Unarmed and melee is so much freaking more fun than guns/energy weapons. Energy weapons suck by the way...

Not sure to be honest. But once you chose a faction and stick with them, it eliminates many other quests because of your status. After the battle at Hoover, I think you're stuck with that faction if you continue or not.

Make sure you walk all around the perimeter and fine both Freesides and Westside. Lots of good quests there. And one dude will talk to you and reveal a bunch of formulas for the reload bench.
