Is this one of the games that will let me play side quests after the main quest?

No. I'd say get yourself to about level 26 then finish the main quest. You can always start a new character and repeat the game, doing the side quests that you didn't complete the first time.

I got to Freeside last night so I'm already pretty close to The Strip. Is this one of the games that will let me play side quests after the main quest? I tend to like to blow through the main story quickly, but it sucks when it prevents you from doing other stuff when you finish.

Theres 2 main spots where you have to make decisions that you cant reverse. At some point after reaching vegas, you will be greeted by messengers from the different factions telling you to go talk to them. Completing the missions for one of these factions will block you from going and talking to the other factions - but it only blocks those specific quest lines, not all quests, and not even all the other side quests related to those factions.

Near the very end there is a spot where you will clearly be told by the game that continuing on from there is a point of no return. If you continue the main story line from there you cannot stop until the game is over, and no it doesn't just throw you back into the desert afterward, the game is really over. Just make a save right before that spot so you can go back and play around whenever you want to.

I have played about 20+ hours and still exploring the wasteland ,not gone to Vegas yet and have no of intention of doing so until I have found all the other places and done all or most of the quests in those areas.

Main part of games like Fallout: New Vegas is the exploring part and not rushing through the game,I'm sure I have lot of good content to do in the game before reaching New Vegas.

Also on the second point, you will need to have a save before this point to be able to play the DLC (if it gets released for PC).

I have found out theres a buttload of quests for the NCR and most of them can be done without pissing off the Legion. You have to go very far up eithers chain before the other gets cut off. In my case it was disabling or killing Mr House. I got a popup with about 4 big legion quests saying "QUEST FAILED!" Thats how I knew I was finished. Was pissed me off was every time I killed a legion member I got another popup saying my reputation with them had fallen. Well no fucking shit morans, we're at war!

Also, you can have allies of the Brotherhood, Great Khans, Boomers, and White Glove society. Most of them are actually quite difficult to get and require you do things in a very specific order. For the khans you have to convince one special khan you need allies and you have to kill his boss at a very specific time in the course of the quest. If you screw it up you risk either war with the khans or at the very least not getting their support when the new guy takes over.
White Gloves: You have to make the special pie yourself, call head waiter, let him take the food from the oven, wait for him to walk away, rush and talk to the son (cuz if you talk to him early he wants to walk around with you and the head waiter can NOT be allowed to spot him), walk up to the serving room, wait for asshole to make speech, pop out with son and show everyone he's still alive.
If everything works out you get the hotel penthouse and support of the Gloves. Also, you get an outfit to give to Veronica and complete her quest.

Cass's quest is complicated too and can be permanently messed up if you dont do specific things.

Brotherhood quests require you to NOT replace the current head of the chapter, cuz the new guy will not ally with other factions, but he does treat the courier well with equipment.

Not like it really matters when the end game is so easy, or it was for me when I went on my own.
The ending felt really weak.

It depends on how you do it.
First time I took the Yes Man ending, still have to kill Caesar. He was tough as hell, especially with all those legionaries. Went through laser gatling ammo like a sonofbitch and he took forever. 2nd time I didnt even talk to him. I stood at a distance and launched missiles. He went down fast and no help rushed in to save him.

I am now doing the legion ending and dont know how hard it will be.

Taking out Caesar was one of the highlights in 2 of my playthroughs. First time, I swiped my equipment from the front gate, then shot my way in before mini-gun'ing every one of them to death.

Second time, I told him to go to hell, and got attacked. I then made for the tent's door while setting off 2 blocks of C-4. Didn't take anyone out, but messed them up enough so that I could easily melee one guard to death. With 100 unarmed and level 26, I picked up a ballistic fist and finished them off. Love unarmed...

Decide early on if you want an NCR or Legion ending. Cuz you cant go too far into either before you cut off the other.
I did a bunch of stuff to help the NCR that didnt really hurt the Legion, but when I went to talk to Caesar he refused to offer me quests and eventually just attacked. Because I didnt make many hard saves it looks like I will have to start all over at level 1 and this time make a beeline for the Legion camp.

I save a lot, but I think I've already made an enemy of the Legion. :p Their legionnaires attack on sight.

Not sure if I want the NCR ending or the Independent New Vegas ending though, I'm trying not to read much into the spoilers. Only using the wiki for map directions.
