First time loading up it took longer then expected to load but after a minute or two my firewall popped up asking if I wanted to give FO3 permission to access the internet, that may be your issue as well (try turning your firewall off or wait).

I'm only a few hours in, did a few sidequests and such and Christ, is there no ammo lying around? I have to resort to using VATS almost every single encounter because going all COD on a bastard is such a waste of ammo.

edit - minor nitpick, I hate the dialog system. And I really hate the lockpicking, it's as stupid as it was in Oblivion.

I end up quick saving, then forcing the lock open. If it doesn't work, I just quick load. Rinse and repeat.

My birthday is on 6 Nov so I will wait until then to pick it up. REally looking forward to it. I haven't looked forward to a game this much since KOTOR2.

A review is out on Gamespot, if anyone is interested. 9.0 I think... Basically what they said, is that it is Oblivion with guns, but that's "not necessarily a bad thing". ;)

What some of us need to realize, is that people change, times change and games change. We cant, and shouldn't expect Fallout 3 to be done like it was in the past. I know it's hard to let go, and I probably don't want to, but we should move on guys! The past will not return no matter how much we want it to. Fallout is made by a completely different company, and different developers. It's a whole new game that just happens to be based on the old classics. Gamespot's reviews are usually correct, at least as far as I'm concerned, so I will give Fallout 3 a try, and I think I will enjoy it.

It's gotten awesome reviews so far (except from the diehard FO fanboys), and I generally judge a game based on its own merit, not on how it fits with its predecessors.

do these patches theoretically circumvent the need for the presence of hypothetical media in a hypothetical media reader? :p

I think the odds of Securom issuing a no strings attached no-cd are about equal to us taxpayers getting a profit on that 700 billion we gave to Wall Street ;)

Well, that sucked... the breath out of me. It's been a while since I've went wow and

Spoilers

leaving the vault for the first time was amazing. Oblivion send you out for the first time into some valley surrounded by hills and buildings. This time, they put you on a hill overlooking everything.

Another thing I notcied is the story. Believe it or not, I actually give a shit. It runs well enough. I'm at about medium, it's smooth using medium textures (trying large tomorrow). Hope someone comes out with a tweaking guide soon.

And controls: they are pretty simple. Not many keys mapped or shortcuts available. You can guess why, but they work pretty well. Still wish I can go to the map or inventory with one key though. The slow-mo targetting is also pretty good. I find myself using it almost as much as free-aim.

woot! This game kicks ass so far! I have to say that all my doubts about the gamebryo engine, Bethesda's rep from Oblivion, etc. have all been assuaged. The game runs beautifully, looks great, and has some really cool things. VATS works fantastically as a replacement for turn-based combat (it's really fun to see heads explode or legs get blown off), and Beth didn't skimp on the gore or vulgarity. The only problem is that I can't seem to get a bed to sleep in in Megaton (at least, not without an expensive whore) - I just want to finish some quests!

I'm only a few hours in, did a few sidequests and such and Christ, is there no ammo lying around? I have to resort to using VATS almost every single encounter because going all COD on a bastard is such a waste of ammo.

I've been finding ammo everywhere. Try going to the Super Duper Mart when Moira gives you the quest in Megaton - there's tons of ammo there (but lots of raiders too).

As well as a laser pistol and a bunch of energy cells.

I'm partly specialised in melee so I have well over 100 pistol rounds. I'm getting at least 10 off every bandit corpse too. I can't believe how early I found a flamethrower.

Yep. Unfortunately, the laser pistol is somehow less effective than the hunting rifle for me, despite the fact that my energy weapons skill is twice that of small arms. It's kinda damaged, but the caravan guy could only repair it so it did 1 more damage.

Oh yeah, does anyone know what the middle value for armor means (not damage resistance or weight)?

I have to wait until the game is released on Steam for me to buy it, but in the older Fallout games, armor had AC, damage threshold, damage resistance and weight. AC reduces the chance to hit percentage equal to its value. If hit, the damage threshold is subtracted from the resulting damage. The one that most people did not understand is damage resistance, it is a percentage by which the final damage is reduced. So if someone is hit for 20 wearing armor with DT=4 and DR=20, then the final damage is (20-DT)-round(DT*DR/100) = 16-16*.2=13.

This game is so awesome!

All ive done so far is get out of the vault and visit Springvale and Megaton but the story is nice, the characters have character, and the graphics are sweet! Ive got it maxed out and it runs without a hitch.

I just managed to get some power armor by walking into a BoS vs. Super Mutants battle (killed 1 paladin and 2 muties at level 3, took some careful use of VATS). I can't wear it since I'm not trained, though. It's nice to know that you can't start using the best armor that fast.
