Apparently VATS slowdown can be fixed by going from Ultra to High on most graphical settings

The patch that was mentioned for nearest release was only about addressing the "crash on exit" issue, so really it's just a hotfix. Bethesda has said that they are working on a more comprehensive fix. Bethesda forums are the place to best follow that. I have yet to check today.

OK, so I found a bug that annoyed me yesterday ... though not to a point where I'm stomping up and down like my two year old who just had her Halloween candy taken, like some of the other people.

==Possible Spoiler Alert==

In Rivet City, I attempt to jump from one solid girder towards a similar looking girder that sticks out from the bow, and no matter how squarely I 'land' on it, I fall to the ground below and crumple to death. I was hoping there was a way to get in there without lockpicking the door, as I don't have high enough skill yet. I probably tried the leap about 20 times before deciding it wasn't just me missing :p

Doesn't sound like a bug to me. There are many places in the game with artificial invisible barriers to prevent the player from going that way.

It isn't a barrier though ... just a solid looking girder. Maybe it is all a hologram? :p

You don't have to go through the locked door to get in. There is another way, and it's not up high.

Oooh nice ... I'll be exploring tonight, and it won't involve multiple suicide attempts from the girder

Patch is out:

Bug Fixes

Fixed occasional crashes when exiting the game or using Alt F4 to exit.

Fixed crashes when using Alt-Tab while binks or credits were playing.

The game now restarts properly after title updates finish installing.

Ya...that's about it.

Edit: Not linking the piece of shit. Patch is a dud and might force you to reinstall the game.

Ya...that's about it.

The crash on exit was the only issue I had.

Ok, be careful. I just tried the patch, it stalled. For some reason, it opened the Windows CMD Dos prompt while 'trying' to work. Hope it didn't fuck up my install.

Edit: Looking at the official forums. Apparently, the patch installs, then it tries to launch the game and stalls. However, according to the game file version numbers, it has supposedly updated properly.

Running WS2k3...

I just happened to start a new game to change poor SPECIAL assignments from the earlier run. I had few prior crashes or bugs at all.

Post-patch, I can't walk far from the exit of the vault. My shit hard-locks and I have to do a hard reset. I updated my video drivers, but no luck.

I'm currently re-intalling the game from scratch in hopes that the patch was the culprit here.

Don't know if the patch worked or not. What I do know is that I just crashed upon exiting. *claps*

So I got my new GTX260 today; all my issues with F3 are now gone. There are no slowdowns and I can now navigate VATS very quickly.

FYI I did not install the patch yet and nothing but the GPU changed.

Old GPU: 8800GTS
Old Settings: Medium/High quality, no AA/AF, 1920x1200

New GPU: GTX 260
New Settings: Very High, 4AA, 8AF. 1920x1200

WTF!? I know the new card is better, but there has to be some bug with the 88xx series for this game...

There's no problems with the GeForce 8 series with Fallout 3, you just over-estimated your 8800GTS. You played at 1920x1200, and even at Medium/High settings without AA or AF it will stress it at least two times more than it would on a GTX260. With the system in my signature I play the game on Ultra settings, with 4xAA and 16xAF, but I play only at 1024x768 resolution.

I get around 40FPS indoors and around 30 to 40FPS outdoors, and it does drop below the 30FPS mark at times, especially outside of Rivet City. And even if I remove the AA and keep the AF it still slows down at times, the 8800GTS was a very good card back in late 2006 and up to mid-2007 or so.

This game fried my 8800GTX. It crashed, and I'm now enjoying lovely artifacts at boot screen and the inability to see the windows log-on screen.

Thank God it's still under warranty, so I can still RMA it to EVGA.

Shitcakes. (posting from iPhone FTL).
