Fall out 4: XBone PS4 or PC?

Hi,

I'd like to Fallout 4 but i'm not sure what system to run it on.

I think it'd be nice to run it on a PC at 4k but i'm not sure what specs i'll need.

Thoughts?

I had a 1st gen one of those. It died recently. That's OK, I already played Little Big Planet.

I just went through this same dilemma. Spend up to a grand on a new PC to run it or get a PS4 or Xbone. I went with a PS4 ultimately because the graphics strength is supposed to be better.

Also: I ended up being able to get a PS4 bundle out the door for $281 yesterday through gamestop.
$100 trade in credit for PS3 or Xbox360
$349 bundle deal for PS4 with Uncharted & Fallout4

Seemed like too good of a deal to pass up.

It seems F4 runs better even on a budget low end gaming machine than it does on either of the consoles. Consoles reportedly cap at 30fps but often dip into low 20's. Performance will improve on consoles with patches, but then again so will PC.

I feel that Bethesda games require a PC and the wonderful mod community in order to play them properly.

Now, they are the type of games that I would like to be able to sit back on my couch and play on the big TV with a gamepad (no, I'm not hooking my desktop up to the 4k TV--and yes, that does sound like a fantastic idea), I think the crummy work the Bethesda devs put into their release games more or less limit their games to the PC platform. I also prefer KB/M in general; even when these games are now being ported from a gamepad design.

So it's either 4k on the PC or else xbone/ps4? Why are you holding PC to such high standards? It'll still look better and have a higher framerate on PC even if you can't run at 4k. Both the PS4 and the xbone are locked at 30 fps, and there are places where they both dip well below that in game. A "budget gaming" pc can apparently run it at around 40 fps at equivalent graphic settings.

My HTPC has an intel 2500K (OCed to 4ghz) and an R9-290X and it will run it on ultra setting at 60FPS with some minor drops into the 40fps range. I have little doubt that I'm getting a far superior experience compared to either console.

Wait, wait. A major Bethesda title is buggy at launch? Skyrim had dragons that would fly backwards at warp speed months after release, and that particular bug was actually added by their nth bugfix update. I think with the major success of Skyrim everyone that doesn't live under a rock knows what to expect from Bethesda's QA, but nobody really cares because their RPGs are that good.

It's not going to get cheaper though, ever. By the time the price goes down they'll be selling the goty version for the original retail price.

If you are wanting to spec out a 4k gamer, post in GH using the forum sticky guidelines, and you will get multiple builds with pricing from the helpful members there.

Otherwise as pointed out, a budget PC can still outperform either console at similar settings. We are talking i3 and 750ti.

If you go console, the PS4 is the better choice. No surprise since it has a better GPU and significantly more system bandwidth. Reviews support that as well, with the PS4 providing the better experience. Which may improve yet with system updates.

I would trade in but I can't imagine giving up all my 360 titles. Maybe it would be easier if there was BC for all of them that was stable. But there isn't.

Because a PS4 offers an upper bound based on their hardware; a PC offers an upper bound based on what i'm willing to pay. I live way below my means, so why not build a great system?

Sarcasm? Because that is a silly thing to say otherwise. PC - the ultimate edition of New Vegas cost me $5 on a steam sale. And anyone that paid retail certainly did not have to. Console deals on FO4 were everywhere. And I pre-ordered PC from CD keys with the season pass for under $65.

I'm just one person but I've had no bugs and no crashes in the first 5 hours.

Funny, because I wanted to replay FO3 and New Vegas this year and both kept crashing on new installs. I gave up on both.

Indeed, but for the price conscious a properly configured budget pc offers a better gaming experience at around the same price. For me that means that whether you're prioritizing budget or performance, PC is the correct answer.

Ok on a long enough timescale Fallout 4 will eventually go for five bucks on sale, but I doubt that will happen for a couple years. By the time it does happen the goty will probably be out, and that will go for retail price for a while as well. If you buy it bundled with a console you can get it for less, but if you already have a console that doesn't help much. Unless you're willing to be this guy, just get it now.
