Failure during install of Windows XP on new machine

I'm attempting to install XP on a newly built HTPC. After startup, I select the boot drive as the DVD-drive ( which contains an XP disc) and everything goes well from there. After setup finishes loading files and windows starts and I immediately get a blue screen.

It says:

Technical Information:

pci.sys - Address F748E0BF base at F7487000, DateStamp 3b7d855c

Any ideas as to what is the problem and what I can do to get around this?

Check for newer system/mobo BIOS. Test memory modules, hard disk (e.g. bad sectors), check cabling, use different install media (if you are using a burned/pirated copy). Use Windows 7 instead of XP.

You have encountered a very common problem. Just to be clear, Windows isn't starting, installation is simply trying to continue.

You must slipstream the service packs. I used nLite back in the day...I would also suggest that your SATA drivers are also slipstreamed in order to avoid F6 (just makes it so much easier)

Yeah, you have a PCI-E 2.0 motherboard, which requires XP SP2 at a minimum to install.

I get the BSOD during the first part of the installation when I have AHCI enabled in BIOS. Try switching it to IDE mode and rerunning setup. It'll go through but won't find any disk drives because you need to load the SATA controller drivers via F6.

Its been so long since I encountered anyone attempting to install pre-SP1 XP that I didn't even think of it.

When attempting to slipstream SP2 w/XP via CMD or with nLite I receive the same error:

Windows Media Player 11 (dialog box title)

Command line option syntax error. Type Command /? for Help.

Do I need to uninstall Windows Media Player 11?

using nlite is probably the easiest way
copy your xp install cd to a folder
download service pack 3 for xp
in nlite select folder where you copied it to, click on service pack and click on bootable.
It will slipstream the sp and create a bootable cd

Also if you want to can integrate the drivers for your sata controller if you want to put it in achi mode by clicking the drivers button.

Is this XP Media Center Edition?

It is not media center edition, it's XP without a service pack.

I've created a slipstreamed XP disk with SP3. I've told the new machine to boot from the slipstreamed disk but after the BIOs screen the machine sits with the underscore blinking after the CD spins up and down.

Is there something that must be done to the disk so that the computer will boot from it like it did from the original XP disk?

I ran into XP install problems on systems with RAM problems back in the day. Try swapping or halving the RAM (removing one or more sticks) to see if that resolves the issue.

Good luck!

Did you copy and burn the CD boot image along with the I386 files?

Check that you created the bootable CD correctly by putting it into another machine.

The SP3 slipstreamed CD brings up the XP install menu the same as the original SP0 CD.

I do not know what the CD boot image is, where can I find this? I copied all items that nlite has suggested.

I tried to do all of the above with only one stick of RAM, but the results did not change.

I know that the original XP disk is Professional SP0, beyond that I do not know how to check for additional specifics.

When I use any of the many slipstreamed disks I have created the computer sits displaying only a blinking underscore in the upper left corner of the screen after going through the bios screen. What does this mean?

Are there any other options other than buying a SP3 XP cd?

I'm assuming you mean when Windows is running, when you insert the CD that you created, it brings up install menu. This is correct, because its performing the autorun specified in the autorun.ini file.

To extract the boot image off the original disc, download and follow the instructions here:

Please list your system hardware and configuration, including the BIOS version of the mobo. Configuration includes the mode of the storage controller(s), which is selectable in the BIOS setup. e.g. IDE mode, RAID, AHCI, etc.

Do you know of another boot image extractor? BBIE does not run on my laptop which is using XP 2005 windows center edition. I've extracted it and placed it on the desktop. When I double click on the icon it displays a small DOS box for a half second and then disappears.

Does this mean anything?

You need to open up Command Prompt, change directory (cd) to where you downloaded the BBIE executable file, and then run it from there.

Great, it created a file called image1.bin. Does this need to be added to the slipstreamed sp3 cd? Does it need to be selected somehow when the cd is placed in the new computer?

How are you burning the slipstream disc?

NLite has a built-in boot image that works just fine. Just use NLite to create a bootable ISO image file first, then burn it to CD.
