FB is Myspace with a different look. You know what they say "if you polish a turd, it's still a turd"

you've been saying that forever, how long did you spend on FB? People tend to be themselves more there than myspace... the whole real identity thing and the whole real friends thing. Of course if you friend random people it's not going to be the same experience. Of course if you don't have real friends on there that share, then it's totally pointless.

Importance has nothing to do with getting busy with life... kids, distance, jobs, etc. The whole point is that it's interesting to know or casually chat with someone from the past. It's not for everyone but it doesn't make it useless.

I didn't say it was useless. I can understand the appeal of facebook to some people. Some people like to keep tabs on everyone; some like to want to reconnect with old friends for whatever reason.

Facebook doesn't do anything for me though.

That's not always true. I came across a couple of people I knew from HS (friends of friends really) who happen to live close to where I was. We met up, swapped a few stories about our lives since graduation and now we do hang out now and then if I'm in the area.

I actually use it mostly to keep connected to people I *AM* connected to. i.e. my parents, other relatives, friends, etc. I can toss up a quick message of "hey, anyone up for some kayaking at 3:30? River's at a perfect stage" at 8am, and have several replies throughout the day, all in one convenient location where everyone else who cares can see those replies & know who is going to be in the group. Ditto pictures of various things going on - kayaking photos, my son's racing photos, photos of our remodeling projects, photos of the farm, etc. Makes it much more convenient to share those photos with all the friends/relatives than dealing with each person individually & trying to keep track of who cares about what. Unlike threads here, those who care about something will open it, look at it, comment about it. Those who don't care about a particular event will just ignore it.

facebook was fine until i came to the realization that my little cousin is a whore....then I also found out she is bicurious. I guess I can be proud of the fact that she is open minded....maybe it is a good thing that she is adopted and is not blood related to me.

you can do all that with email (gmail) + google picasa to share photos

I personally don't use FB that much and most of the events with my friends are organized by email. Someone sends a email out with people on the email list, and people respond to it. After the event if there are photos, the album is shared with picasa which everyone can see. More private than FB and I prefer this way more

Ben Mezrich // The Accidential Billionaires

Great book about how Facebook got started. Mezrich is the man.

You're suggesting he would be better to use a website and a secondary application to do the same thing he can do with one website only.

Brilliant.

So, they're too busy to use something that would simplify things for them? If you hate Facebook, then be prepared to hate future versions of GMail.

You obviously don't like facebook for whatever reason, but there's no reason to suggest a more inconvenient and just as un-private (I wasn't aware that letting Google scan your messages and give you ads based on them was considered "privacy" now) solution. After years of people complaining, FB has a pretty absurd set of privacy controls - the default setup may not be very private, but you can change it to whatever you want.

I retain everyone else's privacy when using email by using BCC, rather than sending out one email to 50 people, with all 50 email addresses visible to everyone.

However, my method is FAR more convenient for everyone, especially me. Let's use the kayaking example, as I'll probably send one out tomorrow if the river rises enough (Just had a pretty good downpour.) Everyone interested can see who is going, in a single glance at one location and can see updates throughout the day. With email, I'd constantly be getting replies of "who else is going."

I am canceling my MySpace today.
Facebook is much more neat and professional looking.

User themes FTL.

Myspace lets you edit the CSS, you could technically make your MS look almost exactly like your FB. Is "professional" boring? because FB is boring looking. I don't like most peoples MS profiles, but there are some I really think look great. FB every profile looks the same (not a good thing)

*facepalm* Facebook has privacy settings. Private events, private images, whatever.

You know, people who willfully deny that something are just annoying. NightDarker posted in another thread here talking about why he didn't use Facebook. It had nothing to do with the site itself, which he readily admitted was pretty neat and useful, but it more had to with his personal choice not get involved in the world of social networking.

Cool. I understand that. I don't get people that make shit up about websites in order to continue to hate them.
