Sigh...now even ESPN is doing it, everyone is doing it...

Thanks for this one, also added Ghostery.

Your welcome. I'll have to check out Ghostery. Usually run AdBlock, FlashBlock, Better Privacy, and Anti-Social. There was also an addon that blocked Facebook ads, but its effectiveness was sketchy, and since I don't have a Facebook account any more, useless to me. I hate seeing that Facebook blue F on every site I go to though. Irritating as all hell.

Next step: create facebook email platform, compete directly with Gmail
Step after: once facebook has enough relevant content and links, create search platform, compete directly with Google search

IMO in the next decade FB will surpass Google's market cap, maybe even be #1. It's a shame they're not a public company.

Like myspace?
Nope. People love virtual socializing. Thats why MMO's have only gotten more popular over the years. And why Facebook took over myspace and cellphones have TM's and IM's went away but only to be replaced by bigger and better things.

Not to mention forums like this one.

Online social life will never die, just evolve into bigger and better.
I found it funny when WoW players got all pissy about Blizzard using real names and what not.

FB is owned by a retarded douche. Google is owned by a pair of brilliant and mature scientists. That is why FB will never eclipse Google.

I don't know about spyware, but it sure in the hell farmed many of my email addresses. I checked on my profile(?) page and it had about seven emails listed, I only provided one when I joined years ago.

Not cool FB, not cool.
Can you elaborate on what you mean by this? I have no idea what you mean by it. I'm not a facebook user btw.

I don't like losing access to features. I know there's nothing useful there, but some companies have a "Visit us on Facebook" link, and I don't have Facebook. I always wonder what I'm missing :^D

Some companies or individuals update their facebooks more than their websites. You know there is a world of practical use for Facebook, can you come up with an actual logical reason to not have one?

Nope? Better go make one. I'll even be your first friend if you want.

DING!
You mean like the special that newegg just offered? Announced 60GB SSD for $60 on facebook before it was on their site. In fact I think it sold out before it even made it to their site.

Not to mention there are always specials for other companies. Product releases, contetsts, announcements for bands, entertainment venues, concerts. My wife find sit invaluable to stay in touch with and updated her customers for her small business. This is only the "business side" of FB too.

Again, I just find it funny that people (most with 1000s of posts) on a INTERNET FORUM decree FB as being "stupid".

lots of people that play wow don't want others to know they play wow. lots really don't want their work knowing they play it as well.

also MMO players are some of the most unsocial people on the planet. they do not want to be part of a real life social network

Could it be because it would require them to split their use of online time? That would be my first guess.

That being said, and that i too actually have a FB page, I don't care for it. I got bored new years eve at about 6 in the morning and made one. I don't do much with it, i still prefer e-mail or an actual phone call. E-mail is great for mass communication.

When you tell facebook to check your address book for friends on facebook. It automatically adds it to the list if your emails.

The best reason I can come up with is privacy concerns. Facebook's only goal is to farm data, and they'll use any method possible to do so, ethics be damned. Before the inevitable Google comparison; I think Google means well. They're trying to get data too, but they tend to do everything above board. The times they haven't has struck me as more of an oversight, than actual malice. Facebook tries to slip in data grabbers under the radar, and you have to constantly monitor your settings for everything to prevent inadvertent leaks.

Facebook just isn't that important to me to keep that kind of vigilance up for an "exclusive" 20% off coupon.

Myspace got wiped out by Facebook because they made a bad bet and they stopped innovating. When they got bought by Newscorp, anything new they were doing ceased and updates to the MySpace platform came as "me too" features vis-a-vis Facebook. People migrated to Facebook because it was the company that was innovating by creating an application platform, by adding privacy features, by creating groups, by tagging photos, etc, etc.

Their bad bet, IMO, was on the fact that people would prefer a site with more customization. Obviously that backfired because most people suck at designing websites.

Somebody could come along and out-innovate Facebook like FB did to MySpace. However, I find that unlikely because Facebook is so much bigger than MySpace ever was. With 500 million registered users, with deep integration into other websites, and with the continued innovations they're rolling out, another company would have to completely blow them out of the water to start attracting users in significant numbers.

Facebook now has an entrenched user-base and, due to the nature of the site, it isn't so easy to steal them away. People would have to migrate profiles, photos, and friends lists and, if their friends aren't interested moving... then why would they? Plus, if someone else came out with some killer feature that Facebook didn't have, it would either quickly be added as an app to the platform or Facebook would mimic it.

We've already seen that with Yelp and with Foursquare. Neither of them could possible threaten Facebook, despite offering services that people want.

But you choose what data you put on the site, and whether it is public or not. They do not do anything with private data.

Any notice how all these big websites are starting to let you log in "with facebook"?

Next thing you know, getting pulled over by the cops and they are gonna ask for your facebook profile...

Is there a limit to how far this thing can ever expand?:hmm:

It will expand as far as the users will allow it (use the new features) to expand. It cannot expand if people don't use the new features. This is where the dumb thing comes in.

The longer it remains and the more it takes over, the happier I am that I have never had an account. LOL
