Facebook & Google change ad policy: No more on "fake news" sites

Facebook and Google are taking steps to undermine the business model used by fake news publishers.
The two tech giants will no longer allow fake news sites to use their ad-selling services, the latest reaction to accusations that a flood of misleading internet content influenced voters during the U.S. presidential campaign.

Facebook (FB, Tech30) says it will not place ads from fake news publishers on third party apps or websites, because the content falls under the broader category of "illegal, misleading or deceptive" content.

"We have updated the [Audience Network Policy] to explicitly clarify that this applies to fake news," a company spokesperson said.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg has rejected allegations that Facebook allowed fake news to influence voters ahead of the election, and the company has not announced any major changes that would help filter out inaccurate content on its own site.

"Personally, I think the idea that fake news on Facebook -- of which it's a small amount of content -- influenced the election in any way is a pretty crazy idea," Zuckerberg said Thursday.

Google (GOOG), meanwhile, says it will also prohibit "misrepresentative content" from appearing on its advertising network.

"Moving forward, we will restrict ad serving on pages that misrepresent, misstate, or conceal information about the publisher, the publisher's content, or the primary purpose of the web property," the company said in a statement.

Google has also committed to tweaking its search algorithms. On Monday, the top result for "final election result" directed users to a fake news site with incorrect numbers.

"In this case we clearly didn't get it right, but we are continually working to improve our algorithms," Google said in a statement.

welp. not really sure what to say about that. a few things come to mind, but i'm not sure which one sticks.

My first thought on that is good luck. They might remove it from the ad stream but they will be shared endlessly. Was chastising a friend of mine today for posting a fake news item on Trump and ignoring the fact that it was satire while going off on a big rant. If you're going to criticize someone, do it based on facts.

I don't think people consider duffle bag or the onion in this. This is for those seditious sites using lies to influence peoples minds.

Silly people... the internet is for fake news and boobs.
which category do you fall into? (har har... a joke)

Yeah I guess its harmless... could create somewhat of a vacuum for a new agency to come around and fill the gap though?

I watch fake news streams that show boobs.

Think of naked news with the reporting of the onion.

The DNC isn't running the country.

No, but we're not talking about the country, we're talking about Google and Facebook.

I have no problem with their stated goals, but I wonder if this isn't just their way of trying to make sure only "correct" perspectives are represented on their platforms. Time will tell.

There is no one forcing you to use Google or Facebook.
But here are what the "correct perspectives" look like now: http://graphics.wsj.com/blue-feed-red-feed/

haha, facebook and google saw their candidate go down in flames and are trying to make sure it doesn't happen again. Only group-think approved lefty "news" going forward.

Won't take long until the lefties define every news site that doesn't parrot the DNC talking points as a fake news site to try and silence opposing views. With google and facebook, it's just a matter of time.

they'll just flag everything not approved by the DNC as hate speech and get it banned.

No need to panic. Our identity distortions will continue to be supported by plenty of non-fake sources making their living peddling opinion disguised as news.
