Yes. You'd probably get bitched at, your co-workers might hate you but that's easier than firing you but more importantly it just a stupid childish act not an actual termination-worthy offense.

You do realize that we're not talking about Burger King here right? Where you work, you can probably tell the manager to fuck off when he tells you to make more fries and not get fired, but at real companies they would fire you.

Good luck with that. Fortunately she has tenure, and First Amendment rights.

Does the first amendment apply to Cad who started this thread, or the people responding to her 'fuck off' email, or the people who sent the original email?

I guess free speech is only OK with you when you agree with what is being said. Am I right, comrade?

Sure, it applies to them, last I checked she's not the one who went to the media complaining about them exercising their first amendment rights. Republicans are the ones bashing and trying to fire her for exercising hers.

Are you suggesting that in the "real world" I could respond to a company sponsored email with 'FUCK YOU' and not get fired?
I know reading is hard for you, but try to follow along. You said, "Most people are fired for unprofessional behavior in the private sector." Anyone with actual real world experience knows that's nonsense.

Freedom of speech doesn't mean freedom from consequences of that speech. It doesn't surprise me though that you wouldn't understand the Constitution. Its tough to read when you are wiping your ass with it.

You would know from first hand experience, being a Republican.

Yeah, noone is going to fire an experienced Ph D level employee over this.

If your real work experience includes public schools, union jobs, and fast food joints.. That may be accurate. But at least we are agreeing that she SHOULD be fired for this unprofessional behavior.

It's their choice, if they want the university email system used only for work related professional discussion, that's fine, but once they allow the entire campus to be spammed with non-work or education related offensive to some political emails, then spare me the outrage about someone using the same email system to reply to those spammers with a nice "fvck you."
Yes, their "outrage" is the usual knee-jerk barking because the RNC rang its bell. Mock them for their asinine shrieking. Nonetheless, she is a professional and a role model. She should have known better. Defending her response lowers you to their level and gives them exactly the sort of response they're looking for so they can continue their attacks.

Fortunately Governors like Scott Walker are addressing that problem. If saying Fuck You earns you a PHD I guess you can refer to me as Dr. FNE from now on.

My experience is white collar professional jobs in and consulting to all sorts of businesses, including 20+ years in management. Unprofessional behavior like this is often tolerated, especially if not directed to those above you in the food chain (and often even then, depending on how stiff the culture is). Yes, it is sometimes punished, though something of this sort by someone at that level wouldn't usually result in termination unless there were special circumstances.

That you continue to claim otherwise only shows how clueless you are. Yes, what she did was wrong. No, contrary to your assertion, most people are not fired for it.

Edit: and NO, I don't agree that she should be fired. As I said in my first message, she should be told to STFU, at least when appearing as a university official.

FUCK YOU!

Wait.. what?

I guess I worked with some organizations with higher standards than you. Since our experience differs, we can only agree to disagree here. But, I won't insult you as being clueless.

Oh, and this is probably why you're confused. You have it exactly backwards. Working at a Burger King you are more likely to be fired for such behavior. They have little invested in employees and have no reason to tolerate inappropriate behavior. In the professional world where qualifications are high and good people are expensive to replace, we tend to be more tolerant of employees' idiosyncrasies. You'll learn this once you move out of the fast food industry.

I guess, as I said, I've worked in organizations with higher standards than you. Its OK, not all of us can work in world class companies. One day you might get there. Keep your head up, you'll get there eventually.

The words "Fuck You" insinuate violence how? Maybe, nowhere near the level of Palin's remarks.

I'm not discussing the "question" or "ethical" actions of political parties. The thread is about this professors remarks. Which are un-professional but nothing else.

I don't think we're just talking about violence. (By the way there's no evidence that Palin's comments or cross-hairs triggered any violence. Do you think Rosie the Riveter posters promote domestic violence? Give me a break.) Unlike Palin she has a PhD and should know better than to resort to emotion. It's not just unprofessional it's also damaging to the national discourse. And I'll assume from your evasion that you're a partisan hack. In which case you probably don't care about discourse anyway and prefer to have your side scream over the other side.

~20 years. How about you? I also currently work for one of the largest companies in the world. If I acted in the same way as this professor I would be fired in a heatbeat.
Good thing you have these forums to vent your spleen. I'm sure if the tables were turned, if this was some Tea Bag supporting Academic telling progressives to fuck off you and your ilk would be saying it's no big deal and the Left Leaners would be howling that the Professor should be fired.
