I paid tuition for for 5 years for an undergrads degree that cannot even land me a simple entry level job. I decided to go back to grad school. I applied at the end of November and paid $50 for the application fee. Low and behold....they have no record of my application and they want me to resubmit the application and pay another $50. Classes have already begun so that means I am probably going to have to wait until the fall to go to grad school.

I'm sorry for this stupid rant. $50 is alot to me right now. I just can't seem to get my feet off the ground here. It just seems like every single thing is going against me right now. No career advancement, no academic advancement....just regret.

Peace....

How did you pay? Was it with a credit card? You should have some kind of record of payment.

Cancelled check or credit card statement should be enough to prove you've already paid. The least they should do is let you resubmit for no additional charge.

What are you majoring in? The Co-op program here seems pretty strong so I'm sure you could have made good contacts by networking.

- I have receipts. I am gonna try to just submit the application again (which was electronic, I might add). I don't get how they can lose an electronic application.

-Co-op program is strong, but last co-op's HR dept seems like they just want to take a sh!t on me (Been trying to get them to atleast return a call for 7 months). As for connections, I have them, but they are mostly contractors at the moment.

-jai6638....its not that bad, but the amount of red tape this school has is amazing. My gf graduated in summer 1 of 07 and they still have not given her the piece of paper yet. My advice to you is that when you start coop, aim for the smaller companies. When you leave, its so much easier to go back (I'd go back to my 2nd coop for a full time job, but I do not want to move to Texas). The big companies have this process where you have to go through just to come back. Also, smaller places give you more meaningful projects. Oh....and if you get an opportunity at Raytheon, take it.

The NU Shuffle sucks. I have to deal with them every semester as a grad student. If you want to meet up and cry about it over a beer/scotch, lemme know :)

So show the receipt as proof of payment and quit whining. If a clerical error/mistake like this makes you cry, you'll never make it in the real world.

Also...if the school is so bad, why aren't you applying for grad school elsewhere?

I'm stilling waiting to hear from UNLV concerning my acceptance into their graduate program. I submitted the application and fee in 1989 so I'm sure it is moving toward the top of the stack by now. They did cash the check right away so I have faith in their system and that it just takes time to work through the acceptance process. Of course, one of my former profs, since retired, is also waiting to hear about his acceptance into the UNLV graduate school. He applied in 1971, following his return form Viet Nam. So once I hear that he has been accepted/rejected I'll know that UNLV has finally broken the logjam on admissions and that I'll learn my fate shortly.

A college degree isn't a ticket to a free job. Sorry, but you can't blame the school for that.

Oftentimes the job you get is directly proportional to the effort you put in to getting one.

IE: Checking monster.com every other week and shooting off a 3 minute email will yield jack crap, or crap jobs.

True. But NEU is known for their co-op program, thus a 5 year term.

If you are having trouble, why not try and apply to another school for a grad degree? Seems like the career development isnt as good at northeastern, and you might still end up in the same boat as you are right now.

How did you pay the $50? If you paid by check, then your bank should have a record of that. Inform Northeastern of that record.

whats wrong with that? i work for an elec contractor (industrial programmer/ system integrator) and we have a PE on staff, a couple EE in the office full time and a brand newbie EE as a drafter. they make decent cash, learn a ton and get that all important time under a PE under their belt for their future. id say hit some of those contractors up for some work.
