F-16 straffs school in New Jersey

" The pilot of the single-seat jet was supposed to fire at a target on the ground three and half miles away from school, said Col. Brian Webster, commander of the 177th Fighter Wing of the New Jersey Air National Guard. He does not know what happened that led to the school getting shot up.

The plane was 7,000 feet in the air when the shots were fired. The gun, an M61-A1 Vulcan cannon, is located in the plane's left wing. It fires 2-inch-long bullets that are made of lead and do not explode, said Webster. "

if he was 7,000 feet up, and the intended target was 3 miles away from teh school, its entirely possible the gun was aimed totally wrong? Maybe i'll draw a triangle diagram later.

but that is dangerous though, a target about 3 miles away from a school....

Sounds like it. Base was there first, so they decided to build a school next to it.

The article states that the Air Force was using the range long before the school was built, so I see it as the school's own damn fault for being so close to the range.

The range. In small towns, the locally elected board of selectmen decides on the location of a school, and then the people vote on it. So it's mostly people who (IMO) aren't qualified to decide exactly how close the school can be to a firing range.
