have a question though...does anyone know if a Phoenix missile was ever actually used to destroy a hostile target at over a 100 miles out? Those missiles were over $1 million a pop and if IIRC, the F-14 was designed just so it could carry this type of missile...

wonder how many Phoenix missiles there were? Wasn't the F-14 the only plane capable of launching this missile?

Two confirmed lauunches, no confirmed kills

Could possibly be the biggest bust of any weapon aside from Star Wars

Everything you ever needed to know about the Phoenix missile from wikipedia...

it was retired in 2004 and they 'only' cost about $400k apiece...

But have you read THIS!?!

Except the JSF is currently on hold for next 14 months

Actually, the F-14D is being replaced by the F/A-18E/F

The F/A-18A/B/C/D is going to be replaced by the F35C

The AV-8B is going to be replaced by the F35B

that is my understanding anyway...

F-35 Variants

😱

One of the primary reasons the F-14 became too expensive to maintain is that the main jigs and tooling at Grumman were ordered to be completely destroyed by a Congressional bill some 10 years ago or so.

All good things must come to an end. That was always my favorite jet. I loved the way the wings could move depending on flight situations. Ahhh well...:brokenheart:

No it was expensive before that.. as a Navy tech I know exactly why they were expensive to maintain..

#1 Downing gripe.. Wing Sweep Actuators.. these went down more than monica lewisnski in the whitehouse..

#2 Hydrolic nightmares... these aircraft leaked more fluid than is humanly possible.. they were Airframe nightmares..

#3 Radar the Avionics in general in this aircraft were very old tech.. but the radar while being powerful was also a very weak point in design.. Tomcats suffered alot of downing gripes related to the radar system. (and these peices were VERY expensive)

Every day while the other squadrons had mostly up birds the Tomcat squadrons always had at least 4 down birds per squadron out of 10 usually..

The real reason for their retirement:

The only other country flying F-14s after today will be Iran, Pike says. Starved for spare parts, the Iranians struggle to keep the jets in flight.

Smuggled parts will be even harder to come by after the Navy retires the Tomcat.

"Nobody will be sorrier to see them go than the ayatollahs," Pike says.

War with Iran

Eh... that's a nice bonus, but I don't think we'd retire a plane just because we're going to war with Iran. I mean come on... the only weapons they could have that we really have to worry about are nukes.

So does that mean that the navy no longer has a purpose built air-superiority fighter?

they can dogfight with the best of them.. In my 10 years in the Navy I've watched experinced Tomcat drivers smoke Pilots in far more advanced aircraft in close

The Tomcat has become my annual airshow favorite given F14 drivers tend to fly right at the edge of the envelope.

While F15's like to do pretty immelmans at 5000feet to impress the crowd, Tomcat drivers would be screaming at full after burners low enough to decapitate any squirrel that didn't duck. I lost count at the number of senior citizens I've seen fall out of their lawn chairs the first time a Tomcat makes a high speed pass at 600+knots just a few hundred feet above the crowd.

Saw an F14 at the Muskegon Air Fair a few years ago deliberatley de-stage and taxi under a Harrier in the middle of it's demo while the F14 crew made their curtain call. One of the funniest things I've ever seen.

"In pieces or in flames your F14 Tomcat will be on station and on time 24 hours a day!!!!"

The superhornet and Hornet are more than capable fighters.. in red flag Navy Squadrons do very very well agasint even F-15s and 16s..

Yeah, well, it would still be cooler to have a next gen air superiority fighter launched from a carrier. I mean, didn't india beat the u.s. in air manuevers a year or two back?

I still get goosebumps when I watch the opening scene of Top Gun with that F-14 sitting on the deck of the aircraft carrier, engines throttled up waiting to be shot down the deck by the catapult. I crank that part up evertime.
